Covenant routs Belhaven behind Touliatos' 25 points

JACKSON, Miss. -- Luke Touliatos scored a career-high 25 points and the Covenant men's basketball team led by as many as 33 points in the second half en route to an 89-75 victory over Belhaven on Wednesday night inside Rugg Arena.

Covenant (2-1) has won two straight contests. Belhaven, which was limited to seven available players, ended up counting the game as an exhibition.

Touliatos led a scorching offense in the first half as the Scots shot 52.9 percent in the period with eight 3-pointers. The sophomore scored 18 points in the opening 20 minutes, on 7-of-11 shooting, and finished the night 10-of-16 from the floor with five 3-pointers while adding eight rebounds.

Will Crumly continued his strong start to the season as he totaled 15 points and five rebounds. Crumly moved into the top-10 in program history for career points as he passed Jake Walls '99 with his final bucket of the first half that gave the Scots a 25-point lead. The senior sits at 1,370 career points.

The Scots raced out to a 21-5 lead in the first seven-plus minutes of the game. Touliatos scored 10 points during that stretch and his 3-pointer at the 12:45 mark capped the run. The lead extended to 27-7 after a Crumly triple with 11 minutes remaining before Covenant got up by 26 (42-16) after a Touliatos 3-pointer in the final minutes.

Covenant entered the break with a 46-21 lead.

The margin quickly surged in the opening minutes of the second half as the Scots went on an 8-0 run, capped by a Chris Barnette layup, to make it 54-21. Covenant maintained a 20-plus point lead for much of the half until Belhaven chipped away towards the end.

Daevon Platt added 14 points and five rebounds, while Zack Allen has 12 points and five assists. Logan Pearlman chipped in eight points off the bench and Barnette dished out five assists with five rebounds. Jackson Fitzgerald also had five assists as Covenant tallied 30 assists on 34 made field goals.

Covenant shot 60.7 percent (34-of-56) for the game with 16 3-pointers.

Belhaven was led by Matthew McMillan's 40 points as he made 10 30-pointers. Brandon Phillips had 12 points for the host Blazers who attempted 44 3-pointers (making 14). Belhaven was held to 35.9 percent (23-of-64) from the field.

As mentioned earlier on Wednesday, Covenant added a game at Trevecca Nazarene on Friday, Dec. 11 in Nashville, Tenn. Tip-off is set for 8 p.m. CST (9 p.m. EST). No fans will be allowed.
