Albers reaches 1,000-point milestone in St. Olaf's win at Concordia-Moorhead

MOORHEAD, Minn. – Senior Nate Albers became the 24th student-athlete in program history to reach 1,000 career points as the St. Olaf College men's basketball team picked up a 69-60 road win over Concordia-Moorhead on Wednesday evening at Memorial Auditorium.

Albers entered the night just 10 points shy of 1,000 for his career and reached the milestone on the first of two made free throws with 8:37 remaining in the game. Albers and fellow seniors Noah Beck and Troy Diggins Jr. combined for 47 of the 69 points for St. Olaf (11-11, 8-9 MIAC), which completed a regular-season sweep of Concordia (2-21, 0-18 MIAC) with the win.

Beck led all scorers with 17 points on a 6-for-12 shooting night while adding three rebounds and four assists. Albers finished with 16 points to go with four rebounds and three assists, while Diggins Jr. contributed 14 points, seven rebounds and five assists.

The Oles made four of their first six shots to race out to an early 10-4 lead 3:13 into the game. Later in the half, St. Olaf held Concordia to one point over a stretch of nearly four minutes to push the lead to double figures for the first time at 19-9 with 8:59 remaining in the half.

The Cobbers halved the 10-point deficit to five with five minutes to go before halftime but the Oles went into the locker room with a 29-20 lead. Beck, Albers and Diggins Jr. combined for 22 of St. Olaf's 29 first-half points.

After being held to 29 points in the first half, St. Olaf exploded for 16 points in the first 4:46 of the second after making six of its first seven shots to push its lead to 45-28. A pair of three-pointers from junior Dominic Bledsoe helped the Oles to their largest lead of the night at 53-32 with 11:20 remaining.

Concordia used an 8-0 run to cut a 19-point deficit to 11, 57-46, with 5:54 to play before Albers answered with a three-pointer. Tommy Schyma scored eight points of his game-high 18 points in the final 4:43 for the Cobbers but the hosts were unable to get closer than eight.

After shooting just 36.8 percent (7-for-19) from the floor in the opening half, Concordia heated up to 56.7 percent (17-for-30) in the second half but had just six assists on 24 made field goals in the game, compared to 18 on 24 makes for St. Olaf.

St. Olaf hits the road for the final time in the regular season with a short trip across town to face Carleton on Saturday, Feb. 15 at 1 p.m.
