Hampden-Sydney Basketball Drops Hard-Fought ODAC Decision To Visiting Roanoke 84-76

HAMPDEN-SYDNEY, Va. – Junior captain Jake Hahn/Ruckersville scored a career-high 24 points, and freshman Ryan Clements/Conyers, Ga. added a career-high 21 points, but Hampden-Sydney College dropped a hard-fought 84-76 Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) basketball decision to Roanoke College on Saturday afternoon at S. Douglas Fleet Gymnasium. Sophomore Jack Wyatt/Richmond scored 14 points for the host Tigers (13-8, 8-4), who had their recent five-game winning streak stopped by the visiting Maroons (13-8, 7-5). RC was led by Kasey Draper with 24 points, including four three-point field goals, as the closely-played contest featured 11 ties and seven lead changes throughout.

"Coming off of a bye week, I thought we would come out fresh and with a different level of focus, especially on the defensive end," said first-year head coach Caleb Kimbrough. "We really got outplayed physically. This will be a great one to look at and learn from going into next week. This team has a lot more to give."

H-SC scored the opening basket as Hahn connected on a jumper at 19:22, but RC responded with seven unanswered points to lead 7-2 at 17:38. The Maroons still led 15-11 at 13:47 before the Tigers used a 13-7 run to lead 24-22 with 8:39 on the clock, getting five quick points from Hahn and four from Clements. RC again scored seven-straight points to lead 29-24 at 7:00, but H-SC answered with a 14-4 run to go ahead 38-33 with 2:04 remaining in the half—Clements and senior captain Kevin Quinn/Apex, N.C. each scoring six points. A layup from senior Chaise Johnson/Richmond had the hosts in front 41-38 with 16-seconds left until the break, but the visitors got a last-second three-pointer by Draper to tie the contest at 41-41 at the intermission. Clements (15) and Hahn (11) combined for 26 first-half points for H-SC, while Draper had 13 first-half points for RC.

H-SC opened the second half with a pair of free throws by Quinn to lead 43-41 at 19:25, and two free throws by Wyatt made it 45-43 at 17:11. Hahn tied it at 51-51 with two more free throws at 13:40, and Johnson's free throw gave the Tigers their last lead at 52-51 with 11:58 remaining. The game was tied for the final time at 55-55 following a three-pointer from Johnson with 10:30 left to play. Unfortunately, RC pulled away with a late 19-9 run, including four three-pointers, to take its largest lead of the day at 74-64 with 4:43 on the clock. H-SC tried to close the margin and was able to get to within 78-74 at 1:30 after two free throws by Johnson, but the Maroons made 6-8 free throws over the final 1:03 to secure their road win.

Hahn led H-SC with his career-high and game-high 24 points, adding seven rebounds. Clements finished with his career-high 21 points, adding six rebounds, four assists and three steals for the Tigers. Wyatt had 14 points, six rebounds and two assists, while Johnson and Quinn each contributed eight points—Quinn adding five rebounds and three assists, and Johnson adding five rebounds and two assists. H-SC shot 42% (24-57) from the field, including 25% (4-16) on three-pointers, and 86% (24-28) at the free throw line.

Draper led RC with his game-high 24 points, including 4-9 three-pointers. Efosa Edosomwan finished with 18 points for the Maroons, while Caleb Jordan added 16 points, a game-high seven assists and three steals. Ethan Rohan contributed a game-high 11 rebounds. RC shot 55% (29-53) from the field, including 44% (11-25) on three-pointers, and 71% (15-21) at the line. The Maroons enjoyed a 30-9 advantage in bench points.

H-SC, with 12 wins in its last 15 games, remains at home to welcome ODAC opponent and nationally-ranked #15 Virginia Wesleyan University on Wednesday night, February 12, at 7 p.m. in Fleet Gym.
