WLC Knocks Off No. 21 Benedictine For Sixth Straight Win

MILWAUKEE (WLCSports.com) – The Wisconsin Lutheran College men's basketball team overcame a 15-point deficit in the second half for a thrilling 66-65 win over No. 21 Benedictine Saturday afternoon inside the Recreation Complex. Senior Andrew Bruggink (Brookfield, Wis.) paced three players in double figures with 18 points as WLC knocked off a Top 25 opponent for the first time since 2007. It marks Wisconsin Lutheran's best start in conference play since the 1999-2000 season.

  • The Warriors offense found success early, scoring buckets on three of their first four possessions to take an early 7-3 lead. Senior Colin Biesterfeld (West Bend, Wis.) connected on an early three and sophomore Zach Zuleger (West Bend, Wis.) and Bruggink added two points each.
  • Benedictine bounced back, using a converted three-point play to spark a 13-2 run and take a 16-9 lead five minutes into the game. Sophomore Alex VanCrete (Green Lake, Wis.) ended the run with a jumper from the elbow. The Eagles built upon the lead with another 9-2 run midway through the half and held a 14-point lead at 29-15.
  • With three minutes remaining in the opening half, back-to-back threes from junior Randy Johnson Jr. (Milwaukee, Wis.) and Bruggink cut the Eagles' lead down to six points at 32-26. Johnson Jr. gathered an offensive rebound on the next possession and completed the put back to bring the deficit back within four.
  • The Eagles scored the final eight points of the first half to take a 40-28 lead into the break.
  • The Warriors opened the second half attacking the paint, getting layups from VanCrete and junior Matty Farner (Muskego, Wis.) along with a pair of free throws from Zuleger. WLC brought the game back within eight five minutes into the half.
  • A 6-0 run for WLC minutes later closed the gap to just four at 48-44 and forced the Eagles to take a timeout. Biesterfeld knocked down a jumper and Zuleger finished strong on a putback during the run. Out of the timeout, Wisconsin Lutheran forced a bad shot and VanCrete drained a three on the other end to bring the score within one.
  • Bruggink continued the Warriors' run with a jumper off the elbow as the hosts regained the lead for the first time since early in the first half. Another strong defensive possession for WLC allowed Bruggink to hit another jumper to push the lead three at 51-48 and extend the run to 13-0.
  • A three from sophomore Drew Bernhagen (Markesan, Wis.) and free throws from Bruggink and VanCrete kept Wisconsin Lutheran in front by three with a two minutes remaining. The Eagles hit a three with just over a minute to play to tie the game at 62-62 apiece.
  • With 0:30 seconds remaining, the Warriors forced an Eagles turnover and took a timeout. Bruggink drove and drew a foul with 0:10 seconds left in the half, and connected on both his free throws to give WLC a two-point lead. The Eagles turned the ball over on their final possession and Zuleger outran the defense and capped off the upset win with a two-handed slam.

  • Bruggink paced Wisconsin Lutheran with 18 points, while VanCrete and Zuleger rounded out the Warriors in double figures with 13 and 12 respectively.
  • WLC finished shooting 44.6 percent (25-of-56) from the floor and 37.5 percent (6-of-16) from deep. Wisconsin Lutheran was perfect from the free throw line, going 10-of-10 in the second half after being held without an attempt in the first half.
  • Zuleger finished with team-high 11 rebounds to record his second double-double of the season and Biesterfeld dished out a game-high five assists.
  • The Warriors, who out-rebounded the Eagles 35-29, forced 19 turnovers which translated into 16 points.

  • Kyle Graebner scored a game-high 21 points while Eric Grygo added 20 points and 13 rebounds for the Eagles.
