Gettysburg Holds Off Late Rally to Beat Ursinus

GETTYSBURG, Pa. – Junior Alex Leder (Bethesda, Md./Bullis) scored a career-high 27 points and the Bullets ran off 19 unanswered points in the first half on the way to a 78-66 victory over Ursinus College in Centennial Conference men's basketball action from inside Bream Gym Thursday night.

How It Happened…

  • First Half
    • The two sides traded blows through the first 10 minutes with Ursinus jumping ahead 7-3 on the strength of back-to-back buckets by Gordon, including a two-handed jam following an offensive rebound. Gettysburg took its own four-point advantage with 8-0 run capped with a lay-up by sophomore Jack Rooney (Chatham, N.J./Chatham) which pushed the score to 11-7 with 14:13 left.
    • The Bullets pulled ahead by six (23-17) on a cut to the basket by Duffey with 8:20 on the clock. The Bears scored the next four points to pull to 23-21.
    • Gettysburg caught fire over the next five minutes, running off 19 consecutive points. The hosts hit five consecutive shots to start the run, including an emphatic two-handed jam off a steal by Antolini with 5:44 remaining. Back-to-back treys by Leder pushed the lead to 42-21 with just over three minutes to go in the half. Ursinus rallied with the final six points of the half to pull to 42-27.
  • Second Half
    • Gettysburg extended its lead to 20 (51-31) on a three-pointer by CJ Zavada (Windermere, Fla./Windermere) less than four minutes into the final frame. The lead grew to 25 (56-31) on a three-pointer by Leder.
    • Ursinus battled back in the latter stages of the period, whittling the lead down to just eight (62-54) with a 17-4 run down to 4:30. A pull-up jumper by Leder set the margin back to double-figures, but McTamney knocked down a three-pointer to slice the margin down to seven (64-57) with only 3:32 left.
    • The Bears pulled to five (67-62) on a backdoor alley-oop lay-up to Gordon with 1:18 left. Leder came right back and hit a clutch three-pointer to swing the momentum back to the hosts. Duffey was a rock from the free throw line in the final minutes, including hitting all six of his tries in the final 42 seconds.

 

By the Numbers

  • Gettysburg locked down Ursinus defensively, holding the Bears to their second-worst shooting performance of the season at 33.8 percent (22-of-65). The Bullets finished 25-of-65 (38.5 percent) from the field.
  • The Orange and Blue knocked down 10-of-28 three-pointers. It marked the seventh time this season the team has hit 10 or more shots from beyond the arc.
  • The Bullets finished 18-of-22 at the charity stripe with all but one attempt coming in the second half. Duffey's eight free throws made topped his previous career high by three.
  • Leder turned in his third 20-point performance in his last four outings. He recorded season highs for field goals made (9) and three-pointers made (6), while topping his career high for points by two. He also bested his personal high for rebounds by one.
  • Close recorded his first double-double of the season and the third of his career.
  • Duffey attempted more free throws Thursday than his previous seven games combined (6). The senior came into the game 5-of-10 from the free throw line.

 

Where the Series Stands

Gettysburg ended a four-game losing skid to Ursinus and improved its lead in the all-time series to 46-31.
