VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. -- Freshman Ryan Clements/Conyers, Ga. scored a game-high 18 points, and sophomore Jack Wyatt/Richmond added 15 points, but Hampden-Sydney College dropped a 77-65 Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) basketball decision on the road at Virginia Wesleyan University on Wednesday night in Virginia Beach. The visiting Tigers (7-6, 2-2) had their recent six-game winning streak stopped by the host Marlins (11-2, 3-1), who led 39-34 at halftime. VWU was led by Jordan White with 16 points off the bench, including four three-point field goals.

"Our guys played extremely hard tonight," said first-year head coach Caleb Kimbrough. "We needed to play very disciplined and rebound the ball well to win this game, and we weren't able to do that. We will address those issues and get back to it tomorrow!"

H-SC fell behind early as VWU jumped out to a 28-12 lead with 8:44 remaining in the first half, getting eight quick points from Percy Burt. The Tigers, however, battled back with a 20-8 run to close to within 36-32 at 1:46. Senior Chaise Johnson/Richmond sparked the run with 12 quick points off the bench, including a pair of three-pointers. Clements closed the scoring in the first half with a pair of free throws at 00:07, though the Marlins led 39-34 at the intermission.

H-SC continued to battle in the second half, trailing just 47-44 at 13:32 after a three-pointer from sophomore Cole Atwood/Mount Olive, N.C., and it was still a three-point game at 50-47 following another three-pointer by Atwood with 12:01 left. A pair of free throws off the bench from junior Brandon Davis/Hampton had the Tigers within 53-49 at 10:58, but VWU took control with a quick 15-5 run to lead 68-54 with 5:50 remaining, getting points from four different players. The visitors were able to get within 73-65 at 1:36 after two free throws from Clements, but could get no closer.

Clements led H-SC with his game-high 18 points, including 8-10 free throws, adding six rebounds. Wyatt finished with 15 points, including 7-10 free throws, adding seven rebounds for the Tigers. Johnson contributed 13 points, including 2-2 three-pointers. H-SC shot 45% (19-42) from the field, including 42% (5-12) on three-pointers, and 79% (22-28) at the free throw line.

White led VWU with his 16 points, including 4-10 three-pointers. Burt and Daniel Spencer (3-5 3FGs) each finished with 14 points for the Marlins, while Tyree Golston added 13 points. VWU shot 45% (27-60) from the field, including 41% (12-29) on three-pointers, and 58% (11-19) at the line.

H-SC returns home to face conference opponent Emory & Henry College on Saturday, January 11, at 2 p.m. in S. Douglas Fleet Gymnasium.
