Nazareth rallies to top RIT, 70-65

ROCHESTER, N.Y. -- Stephen Gabel scored a career-high 23 points and Zach Stenglein added 12 points, five assists and three steals Thursday for Nazareth as the Golden Flyers rallied for a 70-65 men's basketball victory over RIT.

The game was played at the University of Rochester Palestra as part of the fourth annual Mark's Pizzeria Crosstown Shootout and kept the Golden Flyers unbeaten at 4-0 overall. RIT lost for the first time and dropped to 2-1. Nazareth will play again Saturday against the University of Rochester at 8 p.m.

Nazareth never led in the first half as RIT bolted to a 12-3 lead that was extended to as many as 10 points, 29-19, with five minutes left. Nazareth closed the half with a 9-1 run to draw within 30-28 at the break. Gabel had 16 of his points in the first 20 minutes as he made 7-of-12 shots with one three-pointer.

Gabel struck again with the first basket of the second half -- a three-pointer -- to give Nazareth its first lead of the night at 31-30. RIT regained the lead, but Nazareth fought back again and finally took the lead for good, 56-54, with 6:51 left on a pair of free throws by Stenglein. Two baskets by Kevin Underwood followed to extend the advantage to 60-54.

RIT closed the gap again, getting within three at 63-60, before Stenglein nailed a clutch three-pointer with 2:20 to go. Two free throws by Gabel with :13 left and two more by Isaac Nelson with :07 left sealed the deal for the Golden Flyers.

Underwood also reached double digits for the Golden Flyers with 10 points to go with seven rebounds. Gabel and Jon Werner also had seven rebounds. Nazareth went 27-for-74 from the field overall (36.5%) and 6-for-27 from three-point range. Curtis Nesbit was RIT's high scorer with 14 points. Matt Anderson added 10.
