The Oglethorpe men's basketball team bounced back from a tough performance Friday night to take their second game of the Vikings Tipoff Tournament 71-57 over the Warren Wilson Owls Saturday afternoon in Mount Berry. The victory improved the Stormy Petrels to 2-1 on the season.

The Petrels were led on the afternoon by junior forward Will Koch, who tallied 15 points and an impressive 21 rebounds while also throwing in five assists. He was joined by sophomore guard Carlos Sone, who recorded 15 points on five assists of his own. Sophomore guard Ryan Jenei added 10 points off the bench.

Oglethorpe shot 38.1 percent from the field, but they held Warren Wilson to just 35.9 percent. The Petrels dominated the glass, outrebounding the Owls 53-33. They also outscored their opponent 29-13 off the bench.

Warren Wilson held a 12-11 lead with 11:45 left in the first half, but Oglethorpe responded in a big way to close out the half. They embarked on a 21-6 run over the final 11 minutes of the opening half and took a 32-18 lead into the break.

The Owls bounced back with seven straight points to cut the Oglethorpe lead to 32-25 with 17:10 remaining in the game. However, an eight-point Oglethorpe run pushed them back ahead by 15 points, 40-25, with 15 minutes on the clock. After consecutive Owl baskets, the Petrels went back on a run, outscoring their opponents 8-0 over 1:30 to pull out to their largest lead of the contest, 48-29, with 12:09 left. Warren Wilson answered with a 15-4 run to pull back to within single digits, 52-44, with 6:20 left. The Petrels pushed back ahead by 13 points, though, and held the Owls at arm's length for the remainder of the contest.

"I thought our defense was really good in the first half, which helped us get a comfortable lead," said Oglethorpe head coach Philip Ponder. "I would have liked us to have closed the game out a little better, but we are happy to get the W. We are still a work in progress, but we are looking forward to a good week of practice."

The Petrels will be back in action on Saturday, Nov. 23, when they travel across town to take on No. 6 Emory. After that, they'll head up to Maryville, Tennessee, over Thanksgiving weekend to take on Maryville and Johnson.
