Oglethorpe falls to Bob Jones 75-63 in Vikings Tipoff Tournament

The Oglethorpe men's basketball team suffered its first loss of the season Friday evening in Mount Berry, falling to the Bob Jones Bruins 75-63 on the opening day of the Vikings Tipoff Tournament. The loss dropped the Stormy Petrels to 1-1 on the season, and they'll complete their stay at the event Saturday at 2 p.m. against Warren Wilson.

The Petrels got off to a 6-1 start over the opening three minutes of the game, but Bob Jones responded and brought it back to a two-point game, 9-7, with just over 15 minutes left in the opening half. The teams continued to trade points for several minutes after that, but Oglethorpe held a 25-20 advantage with just over six minutes left until halftime. Oglethorpe didn't score another point the rest of the half, though, and the Bruins finished the period on a 15-0 run to take a 35-25 lead into the break.

In the second half, Bob Jones pulled out to a 20-point lead when they went on a 14-4 over run over three minutes, pushing their advantage to 52-32 with 11:09 to go. Oglethorpe came back with an 18-7 run over 3:45, though, cutting the Bruin lead to 59-50 with seven minutes left. Bob Jones pushed their advantage back to 14 points, 69-55, with 4:15 left, though, and held on from there for the 12-point win.

Junior guard Lane Foster led the Petrels with 15 points on 5-of-6 from the field, while junior forward Will Koch added nine points and nine rebounds.

The Bruins shot 55.6 percent from three-point range while holding Oglethorpe to 29.2 percent. Bob Jones shot 49.1 percent overall to the Petrels' 44 percent, and outrebounded Oglethorpe 35-28.
