Kaneshiro, Tigers Blow Past Yeshiva

More news about: Occidental

LOS ANGELESRyan Kaneshiro did it all as the Occidental men's basketball team cruised past Yeshiva in a 72-60 win in the team's season opener at Rush Gym on Saturday night.

Kaneshiro, Oxy's senior point guard that led the nation in assist to turnover ratio last season, had 10 points on 50 percent shooting, grabbed nine rebounds, had two steals and controlled the game on both ends of the court.

Jacob Adler, Oxy's sharp-shooting junior guard, lit it up again, scoring a game-high 22 points on 8 for 12 shooting, including 4 for 6 from beyond the 3-point line. He also had six assists and was able to create for other's.

Adler had 25 points and five made threes in an exhibition at The Master's last Saturday.

Caleb Yellin-Flaherty scored 12 points and grabbed six rebounds, and Kyle Dosa was steady again, chipping in nine points, six rebounds, three assists. Dosa took charges, passed well out of the high post and had an all-around solid game.

Oxy got a big boost off the bench from first year guard Sydney Shipp, who had flashes of defensive quickness that created turnovers, and some outstanding outside shooting that helped Oxy jump out to a 45-29 halftime lead. Shipp scored 11 of his 13 points during Oxy's big run in the first half and finished the game 5 for 8 shooting, including 3 for 4 from beyond the 3-point line.

The Tigers gave away some free points at the foul line in the second half, but maintained at least a 16-point advantage until the very end of the game.

Oxy won the battle on the board 38-33, scrapping as a group to clear the glass.

It is a good first game for the Tigers against a Yeshiva squad that was projected to finish first in this year's Skyline South Division standings and also received a vote in the D3hoops.com Men's Basketball Top 25 Preseason Poll.

Yeshiva is in town playing Oxy and Caltech tomorrow.

Next Game: The Tigers are back in action on Thursday at West Coast Baptist at 7 p.m. Oxy returns home to play Bethesda on Nov. 16 at 7 p.m.
