PATCHOGUE, N.Y. – The Yeshiva University men's basketball team's winning streak extends to 11 games, thanks to a 62-45 Skyline victory over St. Joseph's College Long Island, at the Danzi Center on Sunday afternoon. It was a successful three-game Skyline road trip for the Maccabees (12-5, 10-2 Skyline), who remain in sole possession of first place in the conference standings. The Golden Eagles (5-13, 4-8 Skyline) are currently outside of the playoff picture.

"Proud of our guys for a terrific defensive effort on the road," Yeshiva University head coach Elliot Steinmetz said.

Junior forward Gabriel Leifer had another strong game, producing a double-double with 12 points and 13 rebounds. The Lawrence native dished out six assists and blocked a pair of shots. Senior forward Tal Gweta scored a team-high 16 points, clutched four rebounds, and distributed two assists. Senior forward Michael Hayon scored 10 points and brought down three caroms.

Yeshiva got off to a slow start, falling behind by a score of 10-5, just over four minutes into the contest. After YU scored five unanswered points to tie the game, the Golden Eagles countered with four consecutive points to regain the advantage. YU battled back, later in the stanza, as a 3-point field goal by Gweta propelled the Blue and White to a 21-19 advantage. After the Golden Eagles fell behind by four, junior guard Frank Basile converted a two-point shot and a 3-pointer on back-to-back possessions to put Yeshiva at a 24-23 deficit.

With the Macs down by three, Leifer launched a shot from beyond the arc to even the game, 26-26, with 4:24 remaining until the half. That sparked a 10-0 run by Yeshiva, capped off by a layup from freshman guard Ryan Turell, to put YU up by a score of 33-26 with less than a minute to go in the period. Basile hit a pair of free throws with 24 seconds to go, to send St. Joseph's into the half down by five.

Gweta opened the second stanza with his fourth 3-pointer of the game to extend the visiting team's lead to eight. After falling behind by 11, the Golden Eagles scored seven unanswered points to pull to within four, at 39-35, with 12:52 remaining in regulation time. Basile would strike again, 1:30 later, as he converted a layup while being fouled. He added a shot from the charity strip to complete the traditional three-point play, and narrow Yeshiva's lead to 41-38.

With 7:43 left to play, freshman guard Jeffrey Owen successfully executed a timely 3-point field goal to give the Maccabees more breathing room, making the score 47-40. St. Joseph's Long Island would not generate a consistent run to get the game back to within striking distance, as Turell's layup with 3:48 to go increased Yeshiva's lead to 55-44. The Macs closed the game out strong, as junior guard Simcha Halpert converted on both a layup and a jump shot in the closing minute to give Yeshiva a 62-45 advantage. That ended up being the final score.

For the visitors, Turell scored seven points with eight rebounds, while Simcha Halpert produced six points, five rebounds, and a pair of steals. Owen netted seven points with two assists. Junior guard Tyler Hod forced a game-high three steals and hit a free throw, while junior forward Daniel Katz scored three points and dished out a pair of dimes. Sophomore guard Eitan Halpert had a rebound, an assist, and a block.

For St. Joseph's Long Island, Basile scored a game-high 18 points, brought down seven rebounds, and forced a pair of steals.

Yeshiva will return to the friendly confines of the Max Stern Athletic Center on Tuesday, for a Skyline showdown against Mount Saint Mary College, beginning at 8:00 p.m.
