ALFRED, NY – Sophomore Pat Garey (Johnson City, NY/Johnson City) pumped in a career-high 33 points but host Alfred would come away with a 92-85 victory over Hartwick's men's basketball team at Terry S. Galanis Family Center on Saturday in Empire 8 Conference action.
Garey hit nine of his 17 shots from the floor and he equaled a career-best with six three-pointers in the game. He also was perfect from the free-throw line making all nine of his attempts. Kyle Bradshaw (Tinton Falls, NJ/Brookdale CC) matched a season-high with 20 points for the Hawks. He finished with a double-double as he chipped in a game-high 12 boards and he would hit four treys. Brandon LaForest (Cohoes, NY/Cohoes) also registered a double-double with 10 points and a game-high 10 assists. It marks his third game this season with 10 assists or more.
The Hawks would jump out to a 10-2 advantage in the early going and they would maintain the lead for the opening six minutes of action. The Saxons would jump in front 26-20 before back-to-back threes from Garey and Bradshaw evened things at 26 with just over five minutes remaining in the half. A 9-2 AU run in a two and a half minute span gave the Saxons a 40-32 edge just before the half before a Tommy Kelly (Niskayuna, NY/Niskayuna) bucket cut it to six at the break, 40-34.
The Saxons led by as slim margin for the first five minutes of the second half. Garey briefly tied the score for the final time, 47-47, at the 15:15 mark although the Hawks continued to keep it close. Two free throws from Austin Haskell (Kirkwood, NY/Susquehanna Valley) made it a 58-55 game with 10:08 remaining in the contest, but Alfred would go on a 9-0 spurt to grab a double-digit lead, 67-55.
The lead stayed in double figures for the next six minutes until a pair of free throws from Garey made it nine, 81-72, with 2:45 left. The Hawks began to put the Saxons on the line and they built the advantage back up to 13. 'Wick refused to go down without a fight as it scored eight of the last 11 points in the final 23 seconds to trim the gap but the final margin of seven, after a Bradshaw three, was as close as the Hawks could get.
Hartwick shot 42% (25-for-59) from the floor and 39% (12-for-31) from downtown. The Hawks also hit a season-high 92% from the free-throw line on 23-of-25 shooting. Alfred hit 45% (29-for-65) from the floor as a unit. The Saxons would make 41% (11-of-27) from three-point range. Both teams were even in rebounds with 35 apiece.
Justin Carruthers (Greenwich, NY/Greenwich) contributed eight points and eight rebounds for the Hawks. Kelly finished with eight points.
Five Saxons scored in double figures led by Scotty Stopera's 18 points. Brewster Marshall added 16 points with Sage Brown netting 15.
