FROSTBURG, Md. - Christopher Newport's defense excelled again Saturday, and junior big man Savonte Chappell posted a career-high 23 points as the 21st-ranked Captains defeated Frostburg State, 75-65. The victory at Bobcat Arena improved the Captains to 13-2 overall and 3-1 in the Capital Athletic Conference.

Chappell, who registered 21 of his 23 in the opening half, made seven of nine shots, knocked down all eight free throw attempts, and also pulled down eight rebounds in 22 minutes of playing time.

"We needed to get off to a good start today and really establish the tone," Head Coach John Krikorian said. "Savonte's play in the first half was so important for us, he just took control and put us in a great position."

Sophomore Jason Aigner connected on six three-point field goals, and finished with 21 points. Aigner completed a four-point play as the first half came to a close to give the Captains a 42-36 advantage at halftime.

"That was a huge play for us," Krikorian continued. "They had cut our lead down to two and somehow Jaosn got that shot to go in and get some momentum back."

Christopher Newport's defense, second in the nation in field goal percentage, held FSU to just 41.5 percent shooting for the day while holding the Bobcats to a season-low point total at home of 65 points.

Senior Marcus Carter also reached double figures, scoring 11 points. He is now just five points shy of former teammate Aaron McFarland for ninth place on CNU's all-time scoring list. Carter also posted eight rebounds. Junior Luther Gibbs finished with nine points and a team-high ten boards as the Captains out-rebounded the Bobcats, 45-31.

Frostburg State, now 7-7 overall and 3-1 in the CAC, led briefly in the first half, 15-13. CNU went in front, 17-15, and never trailed again. The Captains led by as many as nine in the first half, and stretched the lead to as many as 13 in the second stanza. The Bobcats were led by junior Daniel Alexander's 16 points.

Christopher Newport is now in a five-way tie for the top spot in the CAC with its 3-1 conference mark. The Captains return to action on Wednesday night in Buena Vista, Va., taking on Southern Virginia University. Tipoff time is set for 7:30 p.m.
