Baines Surpasses 1,000 at Oxy in CLU Win

LOS ANGELESZach Baines surpassed 1,000 career points at Oxy as the Occidental men's basketball team beat Cal Lutheran 84-64 at Rush Gym on Saturday.

Oxy bounces back from its first loss of the season against defending SCIAC Champion Claremont-Mudd-Scripps on Wednesday.

Baines, a senior from Stamford, Conn., was aggressive going to the basket, finishing with 14 points on 6 for 14 shooting. He also was big on the boards, finishing with 11 rebounds with eight of them coming at the defensive end of the court.

Baines, who already surpassed 1,000 career points for his collegiate career when you include his 1.5 seasons at Middlebury, now has 1,002 in his Oxy career. 

Baines' running mate Austin DeWitz is also closing in on 1,000 points with just four points to go. Both DeWitz and Baines were named First Team All-SCIAC last season and have been at the center of Oxy's success in the past two seasons. 

Oxy played good defense and was able to get out on the break in transition, opening up a 43-26 lead by halftime.

Jacob Adler had a constant motor, scoring a game-high 20 points on 6 for 11 from the field, including three 3-pointers.

DeWitz scored 17 points on 6 of 8 shooting, Jonny Crosthwaite had 12 points on 6 of 9 shooting, and Ryan Kaneshiro added 10 points, seven rebounds, and six assists.

First year Kyle Dosa gave Oxy some big minutes off the bench in both halves.

Austin Cole led CLU with 18 points.

Season Impact: Oxy improves to 14-1 overall and 5-1 in SCIAC play.

Cal Lutheran falls to 3-10 overall and 1-4 in SCIAC.

Next Game: Oxy is back in action in a big road game for first-place against Pomona-Pitzer on Monday at 7 p.m. The Tigers were picked to finish second in the SCIAC coaches poll behind the Sagehens in the preseason.

Oxy split its regular-season games with Pomona-Pitzer, winning at home and losing on the road, and then lost to Pomona-Pitzer in the semfinals on the SCIAC tournament at home.

The Tigers will stay on the road Wednesday playing at Redlands and return home against La Verne on Jan. 23 at 7 p.m.
