Eight’s Great! Men’s Basketball Tops Hartwick 97-70 For Eighth Straight Win

ONEONTA, N.J. (January 8, 2019)  – Senior Kevin Florio led four players in double figures with 18 points as the Stevens Institute of Technology men's basketball team won its eighth straight game with a 97-70 victory over Hartwick College Tuesday evening in an Empire 8 Conference matchup at Lambros Arena.

Senior Conor Barron came off the bench to set a career-high with 14 points on a perfect 6-for-6 shooting and junior Dylan Walsh matched a career-best with 14 points for the Ducks, who improved to 11-2 on the year. The Ducks have captured their first four league games for the second straight season. The victory over Hartwick at Lambros Arena was just the second for Stevens since joining the Empire 8.

Tommy Kelly scored a game-high 21 points to lead Hartwick, who fell to 4-8 overall and 0-3 in conference play. The Hawks have dropped five straight.

Stevens held Hartwick to a single point over a 12:44 stretch spanning the first and second halves, while opening up as much as a 39-point lead. The Ducks finished the game with their best offensive performance in seven years, shooting 61 percent from the floor, including 15-for-26 (57.7%) from behind the arc. 

Pivotal Point

  • Stevens went on a 15-1 run to close out the first half that gave the Ducks a 23-point lead at the intermission.
  • Austin Haskell converted a layup to trim Stevens' advantage to nine (37-28).
  • The Ducks came down the floor and senior Frank Amari fed Florio for a long three to push Stevens' lead back to double digits.
  • The Ducks forced 11 straight missed field goals, while increasing their lead. Hartwick's lone point during the sequence was a Kelly free throw.
  • Stevens closed out the first out with consecutive three from senior Ryan Coffey, including one right before the first-half buzzer.


Inside the Numbers

  • Stevens' 61 percent mark from the floor was the team's highest since the Ducks shot 54-of-86 (62.8 %) from the field in a 127-83 victory over RPI on Jan. 2, 2012.
  • The Ducks' 57.7 mark from the three-point line was the team's best performance since the team made 15 triples on 24 attempts (62.5%) against the College of Staten Island on Dec. 1, 2016.
  • Hartwick finished 23-of-66 (34.8%) from the floor and 9-for-34 from behind the arc.
  • Ameri led all players with six assists as the Ducks recorded a season-high 21 helpers.
  • Coffey and sophomore Alec DiPietrantonio each pulled down a game-high nine rebounds as Stevens won the battle of the boards 38-34.
  • Sophomore Nate Carpenter recorded a career-high seven points and freshman Sashank Sindhia collected his first collegiate points. 
  • The Ducks scored 53 points off the bench in reaching a season-high in points.
  • The Ducks improved to 11-13 all-time against Hartwick.
