Strong Defense, Second-Half Run Help Babson Race Past Lasell, 82-58

NEWTON, Mass.—Three players scored in double figures and visiting Babson College opened the second half with a 17-4 run on its way to defeating Lasell College, 82-58, in non-conference men's basketball action on Wednesday night at the Lasell Athletic Center.

With the win, Babson improves to 1-1 on the year, while Lasell slips 1-2 overall.

Sophomore Andrew Jaworski (Tolland, Conn.) had 19 points and six rebounds, junior Frank Oftring (North Attleboro, Mass.) added 17 points on 8-of-11 shooting to go along with eight boards, and senior Brandon Johnson (Mount Vernon, N.Y.) finished with 16 points and 10 rebounds to post his first double-double of the season for the Beavers. All three players collected two steals apiece and junior Shyheim Ulrickson (Topsham, Maine) tied for game-high honors with four assists in the victory.

Junior Stefan Masciarelli (Northbridge, Mass.) led all scorers with 25 points on 11-of-29 shooting, while sophomore Dylan Murray (Williston, Fla.) added 17 points to lead the Lasers, who shot just 29.7 percent in the second half and 31.5 percent for the game.

Jaworski and Oftring combined for 10 straight points and first-year Colin Bradanese (Billerica, Mass.) converted a three-point play to give Babson a 53-35 lead less than six minutes into the second half. Junior Julian Alexis (Somerville, N.J.) extended the margin to 62-43 with 9:38 to play, and Johnson followed a three-pointer by Oftring with a layup to make it 69-48 at the 7:01 mark.

First-year Beau Smith (Germantown, N.Y.) gave the Beavers their biggest lead of the night at 79-54 with a trifecta with 2:13 remaining. Babson shot 55.6 percent in the second half and took advantage of eight turnovers while holding the Lasers to just 1-of-10 from beyond the arc.

The Green and White hounded Lasell into 3-of-19 shooting and forced seven turnovers to build a 17-8 edge midway through the first half. Masciarelli and Murray combined for 15 of the hosts next 17 points to pull even at 25-25 with 5:14 to go in the stanza, but the Beavers got a pair of hoops from Jaworski and a triple from Ulrickson to extend their advantage back to 36-31 going into the locker room.

Babson shot 48.6 percent from the floor and dominated the Lasers inside with a 50-16 points in the paint advantage. The Green and White also outrebounded the hosts 50-40 on the night.

Both teams return to action on Saturday as the Beavers host Maine-Farmington in the opening round of the Babson Invitational Tournament at 1 p.m., while Lasell travels to Nichols at 3 p.m.
