Montclair State Rolls to Season-Opening Win at Staten Island, 84-70

Staten Island, NY – Sophomore guard Myles Mitchell-White scored 19 points leading all five starters in double figures as Montclair State opened its new season with an 84-70 victory over College of Staten Island on Thursday evening.

Junior forward Eddie Emedoh posted a double-double of 16 points and 12 rebounds for the Red Hawks (1-0), who built 15-points halftime lead in winning its season opener for a second consecutive season. MSU improved to 15-7 all-time against the Dolphins (0-1) as it snapped a three-game losing streak in the first meeting between the two in four years.

Christian Taylor and Adeola Latunji finished with 30 and 22 points respectively for CSI.

Montclair State trailed 13-10 with under 11 minutes remaining in the first half before going on an 18-4 run over the next six minutes to take the lead for good. Mitchell-White scored four in a row to put MSU in front and a layup from Akbar Hoffman gave Montclair a 17-13 lead with 8:06 left. Irving Callendar IV drilled a three with Hoffman connecting from behind the arc extending the lead to 23-17. Emedoh got the final three as the Red Hawks led 28-17 with 5:22 left.

Mitchell-White converted a three-point play with 2:43 remaining to make the score 42-27 and a layup by Jordan Roberson with 52 ticks gave Montclair its large lead of the half at 47-30. A basket by Latunji with half a minute left sent Montclair into the break with a 47-32 advantage.

Staten Island would get the deficit back under double digits twice in the second half, the last coming at 49-40 with 16 minutes on a layup by Taylor. But Hoffman connected on a three and Emedoh converted a three-point play boosting the lead back to 55-40.

Montclair State led by double figures the rest of the way and held it largest lead at 63-43 on two free throws by Joseph Radi with 11:24 remaining.

Hoffman had 16 points with Jordan Roberson and Callender chipping in with 14 and 13 respectively. Roberson pulled down nine rebounds and Callender eight as Montclair State outrebounded CSI 49-33, including 14 on the offensive glass. Justin Porter had seven caroms with Mitchell-White adding three assists and three steals to complete his evening.

The Red Hawks shot 44 percent (26-of-59) from the field and collected 36 points in the paint.

MSU is now off until Friday, November 16 when its hosts the Ollie Gelston Classic at the Panzer Athletic Center. Montclair State will face Penn College in the opening game at 5:00 pm followed by Moravian and CCNY in the 7:00 pm contest.
