More news about: Occidental

LOS ANGELESZach Baines scored 23 points and grabbed seven rebounds, Jonny Crosthwaite scored 16 points, including four 3-pointers and the Occidental men's basketball team fought its way back into the game on a few occasions.

But despite a boost from a big crowd the best Oxy men's basketball season in a decade came to an end with a 71-60 loss to Pomona-Pitzer at Rush Gym on Friday.

Crosthwaite went 4 from 9 from deep and the Tigers were up 19-17 and feeling good after a steal and a dunk by Caleb Yellin-Flaherty near the 10-minute mark in the first half. Pomona-Pitzer owned the next five minutes though, holding Oxy scoreless and extending a 29-19 lead before Oxy put the run to an end.

The Tigers got within five points in the last 5 minutes before Daniel Rosenbaum slipped a ball screen and laid in a bucket to squash Oxy's momentum.

Micah Elan was the most effective player for the Sagehens, hitting 5 of 10 from beyond the 3-point line and finishing with 19 points. He was one of four Sagehens in double figures with Daniel Rosenbaum and Adam Rees each scoring 13 and Corbin Koch adding 10.

The Tigers fell behind 39-27 by halftime in large part due to Pomona-Pitzer's 20-10 rebounding edge. The Sagehens out-rebounded Oxy 39-33 on the game.

Pomona-Pitzer was also very good from the free throw line, hitting 17 of 18.

Yellin Flaherty finished with 10 points and six rebounds, Austin DeWitz added eight points six rebounds and four assists, and Jacob Adler scored three points.
