Rowan Men's Basketball Falls To Montclair State, 80-68

GLASSBORO, NJ – Montclair State University used a 20-0 second half run to come from behind and defeat the Rowan University men's basketball team, 80-68 in a New Jersey Athletic Conference (NJAC) game on Saturday.

 

The Profs are 9-11 overall and 5-8 in the conference. The Red Hawks improve to 15-5 with a 9-4 NJAC mark. Guard Myles Mitchell-White (fr. Trenton, NJ/Lawrence) totaled a game-high 19 points, eight rebounds and six assists for Montclair State. Guard Jovanni Chatham (sr. Brooklyn, NY/Christ the King) and forward Jarrett Bogus (sr. Middlesex, NJ/Middlesex) each tallied 17 points. Bogus grabbed eight boards and Chatham added six rebounds and four steals. Forward Kaan Yilmaz (so. Izmir, Turkey/Geilisim) contributed with nine rebounds.

 

Rowan forward TJ Booth (sr. Williamstown, NJ/Williamstown) and guard DaRon Curry (jr. Deptford, NJ/Phelps School (PA)) recorded 17 points apiece. Booth also corralled six rebounds. Forward Ramon Wright (jr. East Orange, NJ/Irvington) produced 11 boards and six blocks. Guard Nick DePersia (jr. Cherry Hill, NJ/Haddonfield Mem.) dished five assists and guard Ryan Legler (fr. Stone Harbor, NJ/Wildwood Catholic) scored nine points.

 

The Profs were ahead 43-37 entering the second half. Bogus made a pair of foul shots (18:06) to trim the deficit to two (43-41). Booth's three-pointer made the score 46-41 (17:55). The Red Hawks then registered 20 straight points to take a 61-46 advantage with 12:52 to play. Five different players scored in the run, led by Chatham's seven. DePersia drilled a three to close the gap to 11 (63-52) at the 11:40 mark. Montclair State had a 9-0 surge for its largest lead of the contest at 20 (72-52) with 7:20 left. Mitchell-White posted seven points and guard/forward Justin Porter (so. Ewing, NJ/Ewing) added a layup. The closest Rowan came the rest of the way was 10 (78-68) after Curry's three-point play with 1:27 on the clock.

 

In the opening period, the Red Hawks jumped out to a 9-2 lead (16:52). Curry made a jumper and free throw (16:16) and the Profs trailed by two (9-7). Montclair State had a 12-4 rally to increase the margin to 10 (21-11) with 11:42 remaining. Five players tallied points in the stretch. Mitchell-White had a layup to make the score 27-21 (9:10). Rowan proceeded to score 11 consecutive points to go ahead 32-27 (5:20). Four Profs contributed to the spurt. Booth's layup gave Rowan its widest margin of the period at seven (39-32) with 3:09 to go. Guard Walter Harvey (fr. Woolwich, NJ/St. Augustine Prep) ended the stanza with a pair of foul shots (0:57) and the Profs took a 43-37 lead into the break.

 

Next, the men's basketball team plays an exhibition game at Princeton University on Sunday, Jan. 28 at 1 p.m.
