DelVal 74, FDU-Florham 62

DOYLESTOWN (PA) – Delaware Valley University placed five players in doubles figures in scoring as the Aggies picked up their first Middle Atlantic Conference (MAC) Freedom win of the season with a 74-62 triumph over visiting FDU-Florham.

 

DelVal upped its record to 3-14 overall and 1-5 in the league while the Devils dropped to 0-17 and 0-6.

 

The Aggies trailed for just the first 93 seconds of the game before a 20-4 run gave them a 20-8 lead. Willie Britton had eight points to lead the charge while Alex Matsinye and Austin Stoeckel had six points apiece. Two of Matsinye's points came on a monster slam.

 

DelVal then scored 11 of the next 16 points for an 18-point advantage. FDU-Florham chipped away at its deficit and ended the half with a 9-0 run, four by Darren Davy, to trail by just seven, 37-30 at the break. Matsinye had nine points in the half to pace the Aggie, who shot 50 percent from the field. Davy had 13 points for the Devils.

 

The teams exchanged baskets to start the second half and Davy followed with a basket inside to pull FDU-Florham to within five. The Aggies answered with back-to-back treys by Austin Chabot and Stoeckel. The Devils answered with a 3-pointer before DelVal went on a 17-2 spurt to put the contest away. Damian Washington and Stoeckel combined for 11 points in the run. FDU-Florham never got closer than 12 the rest of the way and that was in the waning seconds.

 

DelVal shot 50 percent in the second half as well to finish 29-for-58 from the field. The Aggies were also 10-for-12 from the line and held a 33-28 advantage on the boards.

 

Stoeckel was 7-for-11 from the field, including a 4-for-5 effort from beyond the arc, as he finished with 18 points and six rebounds. Chabot added 12 points and five boards while Washington came off the bench to pour in 12 points. Matsinye notched 11 points and eight rebounds and Lybrant Robinson also hit double digits with 10 points of the bench. Andre' Butler had just three points, but he dished out seven assists and grabbed five rebounds.

 

The Devils were led by Davy's 22 points and seven rebounds. Shawn Smith added 19 points and five assists in the loss.

 

DelVal will look to make it two in a row when it hosts MAC Freedom foe Eastern University on Wednesday, January 24 (6 p.m.).
