Tigers Escape Redlands With Win

More news about: Occidental

REDLANDSZach Baines, Austin DeWitz and the Occidental men's basketball team overcame a little adversity to pick up a quality road win, defeating Redlands 67-62 on Saturday.

DeWitz got a pair of fouls less than 3 minutes into the first half, Redlands had a packed and enthusiastic crowd in attendance for the new Bulldog Addie's coronation, and the Tigers trailed by three points late in the second half.

But with 4:41 to play, DeWitz got an and-one jumper to go down and made his free throw to tie the game at 55-55. Oxy got a stop at the other end of the court and Baines hit one of two free throws after being fouled on Oxy's next defensive possession.

The Tigers never trailed after that.

Caleb Yellin-Flaherty hit a big elbow jumper, DeWitz hit another jumper and Jeevin Sandhu had a big bucket from the short corner to help hold off Redlands.

It did get interesting when Redlands got to within 64-62 with 31 seconds left on a 3-pointer by Joey Sponheim, but the Tigers were able to get the ball to DeWitz who made free throws to prevent the game from ever being a one-possession contest again.

DeWitz, who sat 13 minutes in the first half with the two fouls, finished with 18 points and six rebounds. He was 8 for 10 from the free throw line.

Baines carried the Tigers for big stretches in the second half, finishing with a team-high 20 points on 8 for 20 shooting, six rebounds and a pair of blocked shots.

Yellin-Flaherty and Jonny Crosthwaite were big down low for Oxy with DeWitz on the bench in the first half. Yellin-Flaherty had 10 points and a team-best eight rebounds, and Crosthwaite added 10 points.

Crosthwaite had his own foul trouble late in the second half, fouling out with 5 minutes left.

Ryan Kaneshiro had seven rebounds, three assists and played very good on ball defense for Oxy. Jacob Adler added a spark with five points off the bench, including a big 3-pointer in the second half.

David Menary was good for the Bulldogs, finishing with a game-high 22 points on 7 for 11 shooting and 8 for 11 from the free throw line. He also grabbed eight rebounds.

Sponeheim finished with 17 points, including five 3-pointers for Redlands.

Season Impact: Oxy improves to 14-2 overall and 7-0 in SCIAC.

Redlands falls to 5-12 and 3-5.

Next Game: Oxy is back in action at Cal Lutheran on Wednesday at 7 p.m.
