Ripon Earns Huge Victory At St. Norbert

DE PERE, Wis. - Almost one year to the day that Ripon snapped St. Norbert's NCAA Division-III record 72-game conference winning streak, the Red Hawks snapped another SNC streak, defeating the Green Knights Wednesday night 69-61 to shatter their 47-game winning streak in regular season conference home games, which dates back to December of 2012. St. Norbert, which entered the game atop the Midwest Conference standings, is now just one game ahead of the Red Hawks, who have now defeated SNC as many times as any team in the last two seasons.

Ripon (9-5, 6-3 MWC) shot 48 percent (26-54) in the game, including 56 percent (10-18) from 3-point range, but it was their defense that stole the show, holding St. Norbert (12-4, 7-2 MWC) to just 39 percent (24-62) shooting and 33 percent (9-27) from 3-point range. The game featured 11 ties and 13 lead changes, including 11 in the first half.

The game was tightly contested from the outset, with neither team leading by more than three points in the first 12 minutes. That changed with eight minutes left in the first half when a Mitchell Reinthaler 3-pointer gave St. Norbert their largest lead of the night. That lead would evaporate in the final minutes of the period as Elliott Hoerdemann gave Ripon a 36-33 halftime lead on a 3-pointer with just seconds remaining.

Reinthaler tied things up with a 3-pointer on the initial possession of the second half, before Ripon's Tyler Semenas answered with a 3-pointer of his own. Semenas would hit another 3-pointer two possessions later to put Ripon up by four, but St. Norbert answered six consecutive points to take a two-point advantage. Semenas would later break a tie with back-to-back 3-pointers to begin a 12-0 run, giving the Red Hawks some breathing room, but St. Norbert was able to cut that lead to five with just over one minute to play. With the final outcome still hanging in the balance, Semenas put an exclamation point on his excellent second half recording a steal and thunderous dunk with 10 seconds remaining to seal the victory.

Isaac Masters led Ripon with 24 points, 20 of which came in the first half. Semenas added 22 points, including five 3-pointers, with 17 of those points coming after halftime, in addition to seven rebounds and four assists.

St. Norbert was led by D.J. DeValk's 21 points and four assists, while Connor Curtis added 16 points and nine rebounds. Reinthaler chipped in with 11 points and eight boards.

Ripon now has the longest win streak in the MWC at four games. They will be in action again Saturday when they'll host Grinnell College at 1 p.m. at Willmore Center in Ripon. That game can be seen live at https://portal.stretchinternet.com/ripon/, and will also serve as a "Red Out" where all fans in attendance are asked to wear red. The game will also feature an Academic Spotlight in which student-athletes from other sports, and members of Ripon's faculty will be honored for their academic achievements in the past year. There will also be a chance for fans to win a gift certificate to Mugs Coffeehouse and/or J's Barbeque.
