ORANGE — Austin DeWitz was one assist shy of a triple double, Zach Baines scored a team-high 19 points with a couple of freaky highlight plays, and the Occidental men's basketball team picked up a big win at Chapman, 70-60 on Wednesday.

DeWitz played outstanding defense, contesting every shot at the rim and grabbing a game-high 10 rebounds. He finished with 10 points, three steals, three blocks and was oustanding at creating off the dribble with nine assists, many against Chapman's extended full court pressure and others taking players off of the bounce in the second half. 

Baines hit big shots in the second half as Chapman tried to cut into Oxy's double digit lead. He also had three plays that didn't look like they belonged in the SCIAC with a tip dunk, a lob and a Lebron-like chase-down block. He also grabbed nine rebounds and went 7 for 13 from the field.

Oxy was up 33-24 by halftime, got the lead to 15 points around the 10-minute mark and led 70-54 until the Panthers hit two threes in the last 30 seconds.

The Tigers continue to play outstanding defense and lead the SCIAC in points against, field goal percentage and 3-point field goal percentage. They held the Panthers to 39 percent shooting from the field, and 29 percent from beyond the 3-point.

DeWitz and Baines were two of five Oxy players in double figures during a balanced scoring night. Caleb Yellin-Flaherty went 5 for 6, getting easy baskets off passes from DeWitz in the first half, Ryan Kaneshiro had 10 points, six rebounds and four assists, and Jacob Adler went 4 for 6 with 10 points and hit a pair of threes. Jeevin Sandhu chipped in eight points in the second half and had three rebounds. 

Reed Smith led Chapman with 20 points, and Luke Selway and Rob Nelsen each added 12 points. 

Season Impact: Oxy improves 13-2 and 6-0.

Chapman falls to 12-5 and 5-3.
