JERSEY CITY, N.J. (NJCUGothicKnights.com) | New Jersey City University outscored Rutgers-Newark 48-29 in the second half to overcome a seven-point halftime deficit and five Gothic Knights scored in double figures as NJCU breezed by the Scarlet Raiders, 80-68, in New Jersey Athletic Conference action on January 17 at the John J. Moore Athletics and Fitness Center and 'Coach Charlie Brown Court.'
 
NJCU (13-3, 7-2 NJAC) shot 32-of-39 from the foul line (.821) and had a +11 offensive rebounding margin as the Gothic Knights swept Rutgers-Newark (6-10, 2-8 NJAC) for the third year in a row.
 
Junior shooting guard Lavrone Green (Teaneck, NJ/Teaneck) was NJCU's top scorer with 16 points (5-9 FG) while sophomore power forward Sam Toney (Plainfield, NJ/Williamstown) overcame an off shooting effort to still finish with yet another double-double—his seventh of the season—notching 15 points and 12 rebounds. He was 8-for-8 from the line.
 
Also for the Knights, junior small forward James Julius (Linden, NJ/Linden) contributed 12 points (5-10 FG) and seven rebounds while junior center Yuri Brutus (Roselle, NJ/Roselle Park) chipped in 10 points (6-6 FT) and five boards in 18 minutes. Newly added sophomore guard Jeff Haddock(Burlington Township, NJ/Willingboro), in his first game for NJCU, finished with 10 points (5-6 FT).
 
Junior forward Mark Thomas (Newark, N.J.) led all scorers with 19 points (7-14 FG, 5-7 3FG) in 23 minutes for Rutgers-Newark. Junior guard Tyler Ofray (Newark, N.J.) added 16 points (4-8 FG) while freshman center Dante Ralph (East Brunswick, N.J.) had 12 points (5-7 FG) and three blocks.
 
NJCU overcame the Scarlet Raiders shooting 48.0 percent (24-50) but limited RUN to 2-of-14 three-point shooting (.143). NJCU had an 18-7 margin in offensive rebounding and a 24-11 advantage in second chance scoring.
 
HOW IT HAPPENED
A 12-1 run midway through the first half allowed the Raiders to grab an early lead. RUN led by as many as nine points late in the first half (39-30) and held a seven-point, 39-32 edge at halftime, outscoring NJCU 24-8 in the paint in the period.
 
NJCU outscored RUN 10-2 to open the second half, grabbing a 44-41 lead on two foul shots by ToneyJulius had two baskets during the run. Still leading by three (48-45), an 11-2 streak pushed the lead into double figures. Julius buried a three at the end of the streak for a 59-47 advantage. NJCU led by double figures the rest of the night and by as many as 20 points (78-58) with under two minutes left on a pair of foul shots by Haddock.

  • Sam Toney (Plainfield, NJ/Williamstown) scored in double figures for the 32nd time in 45 career games.
  • Toney reached double figures in rebounds for the 13th time in his career.
  • Toney produced his 12th career double-double and seventh of the season.
  • Lavrone Green (Teaneck, NJ/Teaneck) reached double figures in scoring for the 13th time in 16 games as a Gothic Knight. For Green, it was the 30th double digit scoring effort of his collegiate career.
  • James Julius (Linden, NJ/Linden) scored in double figures for the fifth time this season and for the 16th time in his career.
  • Yuri Brutus (Roselle, NJ/Roselle Park) reached double figures in scoring for the fifth time this season and the 19th time in his career.

 
UP NEXT:
NJCU will look to sweep another season series from Rutgers University-Camden when the Knights host the Scarlet Raptors on Saturday, January 20 at 5 p.m. The day will begin with the annual NJCU men's basketball alumni game at 11:30 a.m. It will be the 68th meeting in a series NJCU has dominated. The Knights own a 62-5 cushion in the series and have won 24 of the last 25 meetings and 52 of the last 54, including an 86-83 win in Camden, N.J. on December 2.
