CAMDEN, N.J. (NJCUGothicKnights.com) | Sophomore forward Sam Toney (Plainfield, NJ/Williamstown) became the first player on record in New Jersey City University men's basketball history to score 30+ points in back-to-back games and the Gothic Knights are 7-0 to start a season for the first time in 25 years, holding off Rutgers University-Camden, 86-83, in New Jersey Athletic Conference road action on December 2.
 
NJCU is 7-0 for the first time its last Final Four season in 1991-92, and improved to 3-0 in the NJAC, holding off a furious rally by the Scarlet Raptors (1-5, 0-3 NJAC).
 
NJCU led by 14, 78-64, with 3:25 remaining when Toney hit a jumper for his 26th point and by 11 when his layup with 2:30 left made it 80-69. He reached the 30-point plateau for the second time this week with a layup with 1:03 to go, making the lead six (82-76) before RUC twice whittled the lead to one—82-81 when Marcus Taylor his a three with 28 seconds left and 84-83 on an Isaac Destin layup with seven ticks left. Junior small forward James Julius (Linden, NJ/Linden) and junior shooting guard Lavrone Green (Teaneck, NJ/Teaneck) ultimately iced it from the line, making four foul shots in the closing seconds.
 
Toney, who scored 36 in an overtime win over William Paterson on November 29, scored 16 of his 30 points in the second half and finished shooting 12-of-23 and 4-of-10 from three-point distance, adding nine rebounds (eight defensive) and two blocks in 36 minutes.
 
Green added 16 points on 6-of-10 shooting (2-4 3FG) and six assists in 33 minutes. Freshman center Chika Wosu (Jersey City, NJ/University Academy Charter)) had his second consecutive double-digit scoring effort with 11 points (5-10 FG) and six rebounds (five offensive) in only 16 minutes.
