Boxers are 4-0 for the first time 2011-12

Four members of the Pacific University men's basketball team scored in double figures as the Boxers led from start to finish in an 84-59 win over La Verne on Tuesday afternoon.

The Boxers (4-0) started the game on a 22-7 run and stretched the lead to as much as 26 in the second half. The last 4-0 start for the Boxers was in 2011-12.

Pacific senior Jay Merriweather , who was playing 25 minutes away from his hometown, scored a team-high 18 points in the win. It is the fourth-straight game for him in double figures. He was joined in double figures by Nate Olowo, who had his second double double of the season (12 points, 13 rebounds) and Brevin Brown and Davis Holly, who had 14 and 13 points, respectively.

The Leopards (0-2) were led by the 13-point effort from Connor Head, who hit three 3-pointers in the loss.

"I am really pleased with our defensive effort tonight, especially in the first half. I thought our energy on the defensive end set the tone," said Pacific head coach Jerod Gibson. The Boxers held La Verne to 32.3% (20-for-62) shooting from the field.

Pacific dominated the inside game, outscoring La Verne 46-18 on points in the paint. The Boxers' also picked up key efforts from reserves, Nick Edens, who had eight points and six rebounds and Jordan Lind, who had six points and seven rebounds.

The Boxers stretched a 42-20 lead at halftime, scoring six of the first eight points of the second half for a 48-22 lead with 16:51 to play on a Edens' jumper. The Leopards would on a pair of occasions get as close as 16 in the win for Pacific.

"Our guys responded to the challenge in front of them with maturity and poise. I am pleased with our effort and focus today," said Gibson.

Next, Pacific comes back home for its first home game of the season on Saturday, Nov. 25 at 7 p.m. when they host Multnomah.
