Gwynedd Mercy Outmuscles Brooklyn In Consolation Game

MADISON, N.J. -- Gwynedd Mercy defeated Brooklyn, 90-74, in the consolation game of the Rose City Classic hosted by Drew on Sunday.

Matt Sommers hit for six three pointers to finish with 20 points, both career highs. Will Davis scored 17, Courtney Cubbage added 15 as the Griffins (2-1) used a big 13-2 scoring stretch late in the second to notch their second win on the year. Rich Dunham flirted with a triple-double, totaling 11 points along with nine rebounds and seven assists, both personal bests.

Gwynedd in total hit 10 trifectas on the day, as the team shot over 50% in both halves. They would also net 21 second-chance points, thanks to 14 offensive rebounds.

GMercyU trailed only once, after the Bulldogs hit a three after the jump. Sommers hit the first of his triples followed by a bucket from Davis and the Griffins never relinquished a lead. The lead grew to 19-9 after another three-pointer from Sommers at the 12 minute mark of the first. Brooklyn kept it close, getting a three of their own to get within three, but Matt Carter answered with a deep ball of his own before the half, giving Gwynedd a 39-33 lead at the half.

The Bulldogs used Henry O'Reilly's game-high 21 points to draw to within 63-60 with 8:57 to go as he connected from behind the arc.

Sommers would cap the game-changing run with a three to give the Griffins a 76-62 edge with just over five to play and that lead would stay in double figures the rest of the way.

Gwynedd dominated on the glass, outrebounding Brooklyn, 46-24. Five players had five or more rebounds led by Davis and Dunham with nine apiece. Cubbage and Jeff Seigafuse pulled down seven each while Sommers tied a career high with five.

Ben Batash had 10 points, five assists, and four rebounds for the Bulldogs (0-3).
