Ripon Advances To MWC Championship Game Behind Ty Sabin's 50 Points

More news about: Ripon

GREEN BAY, Wis. - Just when you think you've seen Ripon senior guard Ty Sabin do it all, he does something to one-up himself. The three-time Midwest Conference Player of the Year helped Ripon punch their ticket to Saturday's MWC Championship game by scoring 50 points, including the game-winning 3-pointer with one second remaining, in a wild 80-79 victory against Cornell College.

The NCAA's leader in career scoring average (25.9 ppg), Sabin has now recorded three 50-point games, including two this season. His 50 points on Friday is the third-most in a single game in program history, while his 19 field goals ranks fifth, and his eight 3-pointers are tied for third.

Friday's game was a tight battle during the first several minutes, before Cornell (12-12) opened a 10-point lead with 13 and a half minutes left in the first half. Ripon (19-5) answered with a 12-2 run, with nine of those points coming from Sabin, to tie the game at 20 mid-way through the period. Neither team led by more than five the rest of the half, which saw Sabin drain a 3-pointer 30 seconds before halftime to give Ripon a three-point lead at the break. That basket also broke Ripon's single season scoring record, which had been set 39 years ago by Lud Wurtz '78.

Sabin scored six of Ripon's first 10 points of the second half to extend the Red Hawks' lead to seven, but Cornell battled back to take the lead with seven and a half minutes remaining in regulation. After Isaac Masters tied the game for the Red Hawks on the ensuing possession, Sabin gave them the lead on a 3-pointer with less than six minutes remaining. That was the first of five 3-pointers (on five attempts) that Sabin made in the final six minutes of the contest. Even with that performance, Ripon trailed by four with one and a half minutes left. A layup by Kyle Rutkowski with 44 seconds left set the stage for Sabin's last second heroics. After Cornell missed a jumper, Ripon got the ball back with eight seconds left, and Sabin didn't disappoint, finishing the game off with the game-winner and knocking the ball away on Cornell's last ditch effort to get off a buzzer-beater.

The win gives Ripon its most victories in a single season (19) in 15 years. They shot 56 percent (31-55) from the field and 58 percent (11-19) from 3-point range, while converting 88 percent (7-8) of their free throws. Masters was the team's second-leading scorer with nine points, to go along with three assists, while Brendan McCoy scored seven points. Sabin led the team in rebounds with five boards.

Cornell shot 56 percent (31-55) from the field, 37 percent (7-19) from 3-point range, and 77 percent (10-13) from the free throw line. Jon Anderson led the Rams with 26 points and seven rebounds, while Grant Anderson scored 23 points, while making three 3-pointers. Corey Davis added 15 points, eight rebounds, nine assists, and four steals.

The Red Hawks will now play for the MWC Championship on Saturday against Lake Forest College, who upset #13 St. Norbert in Friday's other semi-final.
