#8 Marietta outlasts Heidelberg 94-80 in overtime

MARIETTA, Ohio — Anthony Wallace scored a career-high 29 points leading No. 8 ranked Marietta College to a 94-80 overtime victory over Heidelberg University Tuesday (Feb. 21) evening in the quarterfinal round of the Ohio Athletic Conference Men's Basketball Tournament.

Marietta has now won 13 straight and is 22-4 on the season. Heidelberg finishes the season 11-15. The Pioneers will host the University of Mount Union in the semifinals on Thursday at 7:30 p.m. The Purple Raiders beat Capital 95-89 in overtime.

Wallace hit a career-best five three-pointers and scored six of his 29 points in overtime. Keith Richardson added 18 points and RaNeal Ewing chipped in with 10 markers. A.J. Edwards grabbed a game-high 11 rebounds.

Myron Prewitt led the Student Princes with 14 points and 10 rebounds. Mike Mason also scored 14 points and Chris Moxley finished with 12 points.

Marietta jumped out to an early 9-2 lead and stayed in front the entire first half. Heidelberg stayed close but the Pioneers managed to push the lead into double digits, 35-24, on a layup from jack Thome with 4:28 left in opening period. MC led 44-37 at halftime.

The Pioneers were ice cold from the floor in the second half hitting just 24% of their shots. Despite the unusual shooting performance, Marietta was able to keep a small lead through the first 16 minutes of the second half.

Heidelberg finally drew even, 70-70, on a layup from Kiere Bennie at the 4:11 mark. Neither team scored over the next three minutes and Marietta went back in front when Wallace hit one of two free throws.

A pair of free throws from Dillon Young made it a four-point game, 76-72, with 58 seconds remaining. Prewitt hit a quick jumper to cut the Pioneer lead in half. Marietta missed on its next possession and Heidelberg took over with 13 seconds on the clock.

Moxley sank a jumper in the paint to knot the game, 76-76, with two seconds left in regulation. Following a timeout, Edwards threw a long inbounds pass to Thome near the top of the key. Thome kicked the ball to a wide-open Ewing who launched a three-pointer that rimmed out sending the game into overtime.

The extra period was all Navy Blue and White as Marietta outscored Heidelberg 18-4 in overtime.

For the game, Marietta shot 36.5% (27-of-74) from the floor, 36.4% (8-of-22) behind the arc and 72.7% (32-of-44) at the free throw line. Heidelberg was 33-of-76 (43.4%) from the floor, 6-of-21 (28.6%) from three-point range and 8-of-14 (57.1%) at the line.

The Student Princes had a slim 53-51 advantage on the glass. Marietta forced 19 Heidelberg turnovers and committed 11 of its own.
