New Paltz Men’s Basketball Suffers 84-82 OT Loss to Potsdam in Season Finale

NEW PALTZ, N.Y. – Looking to snap a long losing streak and searching for its first SUNYAC win of the season, the men's basketball team at the State University of New York at New Paltz fell just short on Saturday, dropping an 84-82 overtime decision to visiting SUNY Potsdam in the Hawk Center to wrap up the 2016-17 campaign.

Trailing by four points with just 28 seconds left in regulation (73-69), freshman guard Tristan Wissemann (Shelter Island, N.Y./Shelter Island) notched an old-fashioned three-point play to make the contest a one-point game, 73-72, with just 17 ticks on the clock.

Following a missed free throw by Potsdam, New Paltz gained possession and freshman center Nick Arthur (Washingtonville, N.Y./Washingtonville) sunk one of two foul shots with less than two seconds remaining to force the extra session, tied at 73-all.

Overtime started in favor of the Hawks as New Paltz jumped out to a six-point lead (79-73) following four points from sophomore guard Cory Garcia (Highland, N.Y./Highland) and a bucket by junior guard Dylan Balducci (Massapequa Park, N.Y./Massapequa) with 3:33 to play.

However, Potsdam would go on a 6-0 run in the next 2:33 to knot the game at 79-all with one minute left in overtime. Wissemann sunk a three with 31 seconds left to hand New Paltz a three-point cushion, 82-79. Unfortunately, the Bears rallied and notched a 5-0 spurt in the final 14 seconds of the game to pull away with the 84-82 win.

The Hawks enjoyed a balanced scoring attack on Saturday as five student-athletes tallied double-digits, led by senior forward Andrew Seniuk (Wantagh, N.Y./Wantagh), who notched 21 points behind five three pointers in his final game for New Paltz.

Seniuk was honored in a pre-game ceremony to commemorate his four-year accomplishments with the program.

Balducci followed with 15 points behind a trio of three's, while Garcia enjoyed a double-double with 14 points and a career-high 16 assists. Garcia tied a single-game program record with the 16 assists (Oppong Agyemang; 12/5/09 vs. Potsdam).

Wissemann tallied 14 points off the bench, with 13 points coming in the second half and overtime, while Arthur notched a double-double with 11 points and 10 boards.

For Potsdam, four players finished in double figures, led by Nosa Onabor, who tallied 28 points behind seven three's. Danny Delsol-Lowry enjoyed 20 points.

New Paltz concludes the year 1-23, 0-18 SUNYAC while the Bears finish out the season 3-22, 2-16.
