Tigers Edged By Sagehens

More news about: Occidental

LOS ANGELES — Jay Miller and Zach Baines lit it up from beyond the 3-point line, but the Occidental men's basketball team struggled to find offense in other places, falling 68-59 to Pomona-Pitzer in front of a big crowd at Rush Gymnasium on Thursday.

Miller and Baines were a combined 8 for 16 from three and both finished with 17 points.

Andrew Johnson, the SCIAC's leading scorer, was hot in the first half and cold in the second half, finishing the game 5 for 17 from the field with 14 points and 10 rebounds. With two games to play, the senior from Loyola HS needs six points to pass the great Finn Rebasso '03 for second place on the all-time Oxy scoring list.

Austin DeWitz added 10 points and eight rebounds and Baines snagged nine rebounds for Oxy.

Pomona-Pitzer's Corbin Koch continued his impressive year, leading all scorers with 24 points on 6 for 8 shooting from three. Micah Elan added 13 points and Daniel Rosenbaum and Jack Gale each scored eight.

Ryan Kaneshiro did not score, but had seven assists for the Tigers.

After giving up 40 points in the first half, the Tigers played much better defensively in the second half. The Tigers' offense hit a wall though, scoring just 22 points in the second half.

Season Impact: Oxy falls to 13-10 overall and 5-9 in SCIAC play.

The Sagehens win their fourth game in a row, but first by less than double figures, improving to 14-9 and 10-4.

Next Game: The Tigers host first-place Claremont-Mudd-Scripps for Senior Night on Monday at 7 p.m.
