Third-Ranked Christopher Newport Extends Winning Streak to 15 with 90-50 Win over Wesley

NEWPORT NEWS, Va. - Christopher Newport extended its winning streak to 15 Saturday with a 90-50 triumph over Wesley College at the Freeman Center. The Senior Day victory was also CNU's 24th straight at home dating back to December of 2015.

The senior quartet of Rayshard BrownTim DalyJustin Hampton, and Kevin Regimbal was honored prior to tipoff of the final home regular-season game. The group has now been a part of 90 victories with only 21 defeats over the last four seasons for a winning percentage of 81 percent.

"This is such a special group of young men and they've been able to accomplish so much," Head Coach John Krikorian said. "It took us a while today to get going after the ceremony, but once we did we really got the job done."

CNU led Wesley, 11-10, with 11:33 to play in the first half when the Captains started to pull away. CNU went on a 26-9 run to go ahead at the half, 37-19. The second half opened with the Captains scoring the first 17 points to push the lead to 54-19. The 43-9 run allowed the Captains to coast to the eventual 40-point triumph.

The Captains, ranked third in the nation, are now 21-2 overall and 15-1 atop the Capital Athletic Conference.

Junior Marcus Carter led the way for the Captains, scoring 20 points on 9-of-11 shooting. Senior Kevin Regimbal scored 16, with 14 coming in the second half.

Freshmen Luther Gibbs (12 points) and Cutch Ellis (11 points) were also in double figures. Carter and Ellis led the Captains in rebounds with seven each as CNU out-rebounded Wesley, 43-31. Christopher Newport made 35 of 63 shots for 55.6 percent shooting.

CNU's defense, ranked first in the country in field goal percentage defense, held the Wolverines to just 35 percent shooting for the day. It marked the 16th time in 23 games the Captains have held their opponents to 60 points or less.

A Senior Day crowd of 1,602, biggest attendance of the season,  watched the Captains complete the regular season with a 13-0 record at the Freeman Center.

Wesley, now 9-14 overall and 7-9 in the CAC, was led by JW Lawson's 18 points.

Second-place Salisbury kept pace with CNU on Saturday with a 77-67 home victory over Southern Virginia. The Sea Gulls are now 14-2 in the CAC, a game back of the Captains with two to play.

Christopher Newport concludes the regular season with two road games next week. CNU travels to Southern Virginia on Wednesday night for a 7:30 p.m. start, and then concludes the regular season at York College on Saturday for a 3:00 p.m. start.
