No. 10 Marietta whacks Wilmington 94-79

WILMINGTON, Ohio — No. 10-ranked Marietta College won its tenth straight game with a 94-79 victory over Wilmington College Saturday (Feb. 11) afternoon. The Pioneers improve to 19-4 overall and 14-2 in the Ohio Athletic Conference. Wilmington falls to 9-14 overall and 4-12 in the OAC.

The Pioneer win, coupled with Ohio Northern's 90-82 loss at John Carroll, gives Marietta sole possession of first place in the OAC standings with two games left in the regular season. The Pioneers play their final two games at home where they have won 35 straight regular season games.

With the game tied at 15, senior RaNeal Ewing came off the bench and promptly drained a three-pointer to spark a 16-6 Marietta run. The basket gave Ewing his 1,000th career point. He scored 298 points at Otterbein as a freshman and has now tallied 711 in the Navy Blue and White.

Ewing was one of five Pioneers in double figures with 11 points. Keith Richardson led Marietta with 22 points, while A.J. Edwards tallied his ninth double-double with 21 points and 12 rebounds. Anthony Wallace and Dillon Young chipped in with 15 and 12 points, respectively.

D.J. Iles led Wilmington with 18 points and five assists. Andrew Russell added 11 points, while Will Patrick and Kevin Lewis each grabbed six rebounds.

Wilmington worked itself back into the game and got within one point, 37-36, on a three-pointer from Patrick with 7:05 left in the first half. Marietta answered with a 13-3 run pushing its advantage back to 11 points. The Pioneers led 58-47 at halftime.

The teams traded small runs in the second half. Wilmington cut the margin to seven points only to see the Pioneers extend the lead to 20 points, 76-56, with 11:46 left in the game.

The Quakers again cut the lead to six points, 78-72. But Marietta responded with a 12-3 run stretching the lead back to 15 points, 90-75, and securing the victory.

For the game, Marietta shot 50.7% (34-of-67) from the floor, 52.4% (11-of-21) from three-point range and 75.0% (15-of-20) at the free throw line. Wilmington was 30-of-72 (41.7%) from the floor, 10-of-32 (31.3%) behind the arc and 9-of-17 (52.9%) at the line.

Marietta outrebounded the Quakers, 44-40. Each team committed 15 turnovers in the game.

Marietta returns home to host rival Muskingum University on Wednesday (Feb. 15). Tip-off in Ban Johnson Arena is set for 7:00 p.m.
