Old Westbury Rallies Past Yeshiva

OLD WESTBURY, N.Y. - The Yeshiva University's men's basketball team suffered a 94-81 Skyline Conference loss to the College at Old Westbury, inside the Clark Athletic Center, on Tuesday evening.

Leading the way for the Maccabees (12-8, 8-4 Skyline) was senior forward Michael Berg, who scored 23 points along with seven assists and six rebounds. Sophomore guard Judah Cohen produced a game-high 24 points and went 6-for-13 from behind the arc. 

Yeshiva led off the game strong, leading by as many as 13 points with 5:58 left. After Old Westbury (14-7, 10-2 Skyline) cut it to ten, freshman guard Simcha Halpert drained a three-pointer to extend YU's lead to 42-29 with 2:45 left in the period. The Panthers went on a 9-2 run to close out the first half, as Yeshiva led the game, 44-38, at the intermission.

In the second stanza, Halpert drained another three-point field goal to make it 49-42, in favor of YU, with 16:19 remaining in regulation time. After a jump-shot by Cohen made it 51-44 in favor of Yeshiva, the Panthers scored 12 unanswered points to take a 55-51 lead.

The Maccabees would shift momentum back into its favor by going on a 10-3 run, capped off by Halpert's jump-shot to give YU the lead again, 66-59, with 9:54 remaining. Later in the half, Old Westbury completely shifted the game into its favor by scoring 16 unanswered points, in a span of 2:30, to take a commanding 85-74 lead with 4:02 left to play. Yeshiva wasn't able to recover as Old Westbury went on to win by 13 points.

Free throws were the difference in the contest as the Panthers went 25-34 from the charity stripe, while the Maccabees shot 5-10 from the line.

For the game, Halpert added 16 points with four assists and three rebounds.

Yeshiva will return to the friendly confines of the Max Stern Athletic Center, on Thursday, for a Skyline game against Mount Saint Vincent beginning at 8:00 p.m.
