Second-Half Run Leads Calvin Over Trine

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. -- A big second-half run led Calvin to a 61-58 victory over the Trine men's basketball team in MIAA-action Saturday afternoon in Van Noord Arena.

The Knights used a 21-2 run over a span of seven minutes to take back the lead after trailing by 15 points. After the Thunder fought back to tie the score, Calvin outscored Trine 8-5 over the final 2:18 to earn the victory. Tony DeWitte scored 19 points, all of which came in the second half, to lead the Knights. Kyle Dodson (Centerville, Ohio / Centerville) scored 17 points on 7-of-14 shooting to lead Trine. The Thunder fell to 9-10 overall, 4-4 in MIAA play. Calvin improved to 11-8 overall and 6-2 in the conference.

The run that gave the Knights the lead began with the Thunder holding a 47-32 lead with 13:03 to play. DeWitte caught fire, scoring 15 of Calvin's 21 points during the stretch, including 12-straight points to bring the Knights within 48-47. Five-straight from Michael Welch and a Cam Denney free throw capped the run to push the score to 53-49 with 4:05 to play.

A layup and a pair of free throws by Myles Copeland (Toledo, Ohio / St. John's) tied the score back up at 53-apiece with 2:18 remaining. A Welch layup broke the tie and, after a stop, Michael Wilks knocked down a pair of free throws to push the score to 57-53 with 1:24 on the clock.

Trine cut the deficit back to two on two more occasions. A pair of Will Dixon (Indianapolis, Ind. / Zionsville) free throws cut the score to 59-58 with four seconds left. After a quick Thunder foul, Tony Canonie knocked down both free throws and Trine missed a three as time expired for the final margin.

DeWitte scored all of his points in the second half on 7-of-8 shooting. He racked up that total in just 10 minutes of action after the half. Welch added 13 points, while Denney chipped in a dozen for Calvin. The Knights hit 19-of-49 (39 percent) from the field.

Dixon scored 12 points and tied a career-high with seven assists for the Thunder. Dixon moved into ninth on Trine's all-time list with 274 career assists. Adam Ciszewski (Sacramento, Calif. / Bella Vista) reached double-figures with 10 points on 3-of-4 shooting. He knocked down all three of his three-point attempts. Trine connected on 19-of-55 from the field (34.5 percent).

The Thunder return to action Wednesday, Feb. 1 when the team hosts Kalamazoo at 8 p.m. in Hershey Hall.
