Cazenovia Defeats Keuka in Men’s Basketball

CAZENOVIA, N.Y. – The Keuka College Men's Basketball team opened 2017 with a road North Eastern Athletic Conference loss at Cazenovia College on Saturday by the score of 56-52.

The Wolves (1-8, 1-3 NEAC) will return to the JMW Recreation and Athletics Center on Wednesday to face Wells College. It will be Keuka's first home game since November 15.

Sophomore Trevor Powell (Manassas, Va. / Osbourn) led Keuka College with 13 points in the loss. He also tied for the team led in rebounding with Cliff Stevens (Ballston Spa, N.Y. / Ballston Spa). The pair each grabbed eight rebounds in the game.

Following an opening three by Cazenovia, the Wolves went on a 9-0 run to take an early lead. The run was capped by a three by Trevor Powell. The Wildcats responded with three straight three pointers to take the lead right back from the Wolves. After a layup by Dylan Doupe (Phoenix, N.Y. / John C. Birdlebough), Cazenovia drained two more triples for an 18-10 lead eight minutes into the game. The Wolves battled back to tie the game and take the lead with four minutes left in the half. Cazenovia regained the lead at 31-27, but a layup by Doupe in the final second cut into the margin and the Wolves trailed by two, 31-29 at the half.

Keuka College kept the game close in the second, but was unable to retake the lead against the Wildcats. Cazenovia pushed their lead to seven points, 45-38 halfway through the second half. With 1:52 left in the game, Jelani Fontanez (Ithaca, N.Y. / Ithaca) made a layup to make it a one-point game, 52-51. On the ensuing possession, Cazenovia was fouled a made both free throws. Following a timeout, the Wildcats forced a Keuka turnover and converted it into two points for a 56-51 lead. The Wolves added a free throw, but went 0-4 from the floor in the final minute as Keuka College fell to Cazenovia College 56-52 on Saturday.
