Junior guard John Veil contributed career highs with 27 points and 12 assists and the visiting Tommies used a knockout 16-5 run over the final 6:00 to post an 83-74 victory at first-place Bethel and end the Royals' nine-game winning streak.

The game featured four ties and eight lead changes. UST built a 13-point lead early in the second half before Bethel stormed back. The Royals' last lead was 69-67 with 6:01 to go on Derek Magnuson's layup.

A trey by Veil put the Toms ahead to stay and another by Michael Hannon capped a late 10-0 UST run that built a 77-69 lead with 1:50 to go.

Bethel was held to one field goal and five points over the last 6:00. The Tommies had just seven turnovers and used a 39-33 rebounding edge.

St. Thomas (8-3 overall, 4-2 MIAC) has won four in a row, and its win helped throw the conference standings into a jumble. Six teams are within 1.5 games of first place, with Bethel (9-2, 5-1) still on top.

Ryan Boll had 19 points and nine boards for UST, which played its second game in a row without injured ace point guard Grant Shaeffer. The senior had started 70 consecutive games before Monday's road win at Gustavus. Hannon finished with 13 points.

Trevor Hall and Granger Kingland each scored 15 points for Bethel.

The Tommies play Saturday at Carleton.
