Junior guard Michael Hannon sank five 3-pointers in the first half as part of his game-high 20 points and No. 21-ranked St. Thomas (5-3 overall, 2-2 MIAC) built a 31-point lead in Saturday's 82-69 home win over St. John's (6-2, 2-1).

A season-best crowd of more than 1,500 watched the Toms use an early 11-0 run to lead 16-5, then close the half on a 11-0 run to go ahead 55-31 at halftime.

Senior guard Grant Shaeffer had 15 points and six assists to reach 300 career assists and become the 34th Tommie men's player to surpass 1,000 career points (now at 1,004). UST is 40-5 in games on his career when Shaeffer scores in double figures.

Ryan Boll added 17 points, five rebounds, three assists, two steals and two blocks. Jordan Burich added nine rebounds and five bocked shots. Eleven Tommies scored, including six with at least one 3-pointer.

In ending a rare two-game losing streak, St. Thomas knocked down 14-of-26 3-point tries -- 12-of-17 in the first half.

The Toms outrebounded the Johnnies 40-31. Coach John Tauer's team had just eight turnovers when it pulled its starters with 7:00 to play leading 76-45.

The Johnnies, who took their first loss to a Division III opponent, closed the game on a 24-6 run. They had only six turnovers but shot just 38 percent on the game. David Stokman led St. John's with 18 points.
