Ravens Hang Tough, but Fall at Cabrini

More news about: Rosemont

RADNOR, Pa. – The Ravens and their rabid fans made the short trip to Nerney Field House to face a perennially strong Cabrini Cavalier squad. The fans ultimately left disappointed, though, as tonight's CSAC game slipped away from Rosemont late in the 2nd half as Cabrini opened their CSAC schedule with an 88-75 win over the Ravens. Rosemont fell to 2-3 overall (1-1 CSAC) while the Cavs moved to 3-2 overall (1-0 CSAC) with the result.

The Ravens ran hot and cold in the game. For the first half of the game, they were hot at the free throw line, shooting 13-14 (92.8%). Those numbers turned sour for Rosemont in the 2nd half, as they only shot 6-15 from the charity stripe (40%) for the half. Rosemont was frustrated all evening from beyond the arc, missing all 18 shots taken from downtown. While Cabrini didn't shoot the lights out from deep, they still managed six treys on 17 shots to account for 18 big points.

Even with Rosemont's shooting challenges, the Cavaliers had difficulty shaking the Ravens until the final minutes of the contest. Early on, Rosemont rode two buckets from Kyle Lafferty and free throws from Jamier Hughes to give Rosemont a three-point advantage, 6-3 with just over three minutes played. Still up by a point, the Cavaliers grabbed the lead with an eight point run, eventually upping their lead to 13 points, 30-17 with 6:20 on the clock. Undeterred, Rosemont showed great fight to claw their way back into the game, outscoring Cabrini 18-9 to bound back to within only four points, 39-35 after a Clayton Wolfe layup with 1:02 on the clock, Wolfe's bucket represented the last points scored in the half.

With the Ravens still trailing by only four, Cabrini would again edge out to a larger lead, 51-39, with 17:13 left, but the Cavaliers would have difficulty again putting the game away as Rosemont again scrapped to keep it close. Continuous pressure by the Ravens led to Rosemont outscoring the Cavaliers 29-21 to get back to within four points, trailing 72-68 with 4:47 on the clock. A missed free throw that would have given Rosemont a three-point play and edge the visitors to within one possession was not to be, and after that point the Rosemont rally started to wither. Rosemont's missed two free throws on a Cabrini technical foul late in the game seemed to help douse the spark that the Ravens and their followers brought to Cabrini tonight. Ultimately, Rosemont had to foul Cabrini the rest of the way, and the Cavaliers would sink enough points to salt this one away.

Jamier Hughes led all players in the game with 27 points. Kyle Lafferty scored 14, and Tarrell Willisadded 10 for the Ravens; his first double-digit effort for Rosemont. Hughes pulled in 11 rebounds to earn his third double-double of the season.

The Ravens will return to Alumnae Hall for their next game. On Saturday, the team will face Keystone College in a CSAC doubleheader, with the women's game vs. the Giants starting at 1pm, and the men's game slated for a 3:00pm start. Rosemont will hold a dedication ceremony, and will unveil the "One Empty Chair" representing Prisoners of War and Veterans Missing in Action. The ceremony will take place after the completion of the women's game.
