Brockport Overpowers New Paltz, 93-46

BROCKPORT, N.Y. – The College at Brockport men's basketball team defeated SUNY New Paltz in convincing fashion on Saturday afternoon in State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) play, winning by a 93-46 margin.

 

The Golden Eagles remain undefeated, with a 6-0 mark on the season and improve to 2-0 in league play while the Hawks fall 1-6 on the year and 0-2 in conference action.

 

The Green and Gold never trailed in this contest, opening the game on a 12-0 run and holding the Hawks scoreless for nearly the first five minutes of the contest. They kept up that pace for the remainder of the half, heading into the locker room with a 47-16 lead.

 

Brockport dominated the defensive side of the ball in the first, using 12 steals to score the majority of their points off of fast breaks. They also controlled the glass, outrebounding New Paltz 28-21 in the stanza, 21 of which came on the defensive end.

 

Marcus Blythers paced the Green and Gold in the half, registering 13 points and adding seven boards. Cordell Torres and David Clark were not far behind in the scoring column, combing for 14 of their own.

 

Brockport continued its dominance in the second half, holding the Hawks scoreless for the opening three minutes of play, with a 9-0 run, including a big put-back dunk from Cordell Torres.

 

The Green and Gold didn't let off the gas as a team effort helped build on the Brockport lead. There were 11 different Golden Eagles who worked into the scoring column, while 15 made contributions throughout the contest.

 

A 17-2 run down to the seven minute mark helped grow the Brockport lead, as a trey from Hamed Shamseldin gave the Golden Eagles a 80-30 lift. Jacob Peterson came off the bench and made a big impact, with 12 of his 14 points coming in the second half. The freshman went 5-of-6 from the floor, and knocked down a pair of free throws to go with two boards.

 

The Golden Eagles never let up, as they reached their largest lead of the contest in the final minute of play, a 54 point swell, after a Montgomery Stroman lay-in. The Green and Gold allowed one more New Paltz bucket, as they secured the huge 98-46 win.

 

Five Golden Eagles found themselves in double figures, as Blythers led the Green and Gold, just missing a double-double at 15 points, nine rebounds, adding three blocks. Peterson turned in 14 points, while Shamseldin netted 11, had three assists and two steals. Devonn Gavin and Malick Sylla each had 10 points, while Jake Mitchell added seven points, six rebounds and a game-high four steals and three assists in the outing.

 

As a team, Brockport shot 49.3 percent from the field, but it was their defense that stepped up, forcing 31 turnovers, which they used for 32 points. The Golden Eagles also outworked their counterparts in the lane, with a 58-20 margin in points in the paint.

 

The Golden Eagles will be back in action in a non-conference matchup, as they head to Hobart College for a Brockport double-header. The men's contest will tip off at 8 pm.
