Tommies pull away late for win

Senior guard Grant Shaeffer contributed 20 points and five assists and the host Tommies got 40 bench points in Tuesday night's 83-65 non-conference men's basketball win over St. Scholastica at Schoenecker Arena.

The No. 10-ranked Tommies (3-1) won their third game in a row by shooting 51 percent from the field (33-of-65) and recording just 11 turnovers.

Michael Hannon scored 16 points and Connor Bair scored 14. John Veil had eight points and nine rebounds in 18 minutes before leaving with an injury. Ryan Boll added nine rebounds and three steals.

UST was outscored 27-7 at the foul line but countered that by outscoring the Saints 30-12 from 3-point range.

Bair hit a pair of treys to fuel a 15-0 second-half run that pushed the Tommie lead to 73-52 with 4:53 to play.

Brandon Newman scored 17, Nate Weets added 16 points, and Collin Anderson scored 11 points for the Saints (1-2).  CSS shot just 28 percent in the second half and 34 percent on the game. CSS had 14 turnovers but made 27-of-35 at the foul line.

The Tommies are off for eight days and open ther MIAC season Nov. 30 at home against Macalester.
