UMHB men fall to Schreiner

Kerrville, Texas – The University of Mary Hardin-Baylor men's basketball team had a hot night shooting the basketball, but Schreiner's advantage in second chance points was too much to overcome as the Cru fell 94-89 Tuesday night in Kerrville. The loss drops UMHB to 1-2 on the season while the Mountaineers improve to 1-3 with the victory.

The Cru's hot shooting helped UMHB jump out to a 32-24 lead midway through the first half, but Schreiner fought back to take a 53-46 lead into halftime. The Cru closed to within two points early in the second half, but Schreiner was once again able to answer and led by as many as ten points. The Mountaineers pulled down seven offensive rebounds and held a 13-2 edge on UMHB in second chance points in the contest.

Braden Hammond erupted for a career-high 36 points to lead the Cru. Hammond was 7-11 from three-point range. Demarius Cress hit 5-8 from long-range and finished with 27 points. Aubrie King also reached double figures with 12 points for the Cru. UMHB shot 52 percent from the field and finished 15-28 from beyond the arc.

Kennan Gumbs topped four players in double figures with 22 points for Schreiner. Jared Thompson added 21 points and a game-high eight rebounds. The Mountaineers shot 56 percent from the field in the game and out rebounded UMHB 37-24. Schreiner also went 27-33 from the free-throw line compared to UMHB's 16-29 shooting from the stripe.

The Cru will return to action with another non-conference road game this weekend. UMHB will face Trinity University in a 6:00 PM start in San Antonio on Sunday.
