Rams Fall to Rowan Despite Double-Double from Riefenstahl

Chester, Pa. - The Farmingdale State men's basketball team fell, 89-87, to Rowan University despite a double-double of 18 points and 22 rebounds from sophomore forward George Riefenstahl (Bayport, N.Y.) in the opening game of the Widener Tip-Off Tournament.

Tied 46-46 with 15:48 remaining, Rowan (1-1) used a 13-2 run over the next 3:41 to open up a 59-48 advantage. After the Profs extended the lead to 68-54, Farmingdale State (0-1) senior forward Weldon Irvine* (Queens, N.Y.) answered with a pair of free-throws and a layup to cut the deficit to 10 with 8:12 left on the clock.

Trailing 78-66, a 7-0 FSC run highlighted by two Riefenstahl dunks, pulled the Rams within five, 78-73. On Rowan's next possession, senior forward Shawn Wilson (Pleasantville, N.J.) converted a layup before a Trey Kinard (Deer Park, N.Y.) jumper and free-throw by Liam Monaghan (Rockaway Beach, N.Y.) cut the FSC deficit to 80-76 with 2:54 remaining.

With 29 seconds left to play and the Rams down seven, a Matthew Graham (Valley Stream, N.Y.) layup cut the Rowan lead to 87-82. After Wilson converted 1-of-2 at the line on Rowan's next possession, FSC responded with a Riefenstahl layup and a Jarred Marrow (Amityville, N.Y.) 3-pointer to close within one, 88-87, with seven seconds remaining.

After Rowan hit 1-of-2 at the line to go ahead by two, the Rams were unable to attempt a shot on their final possession and fell, 89-87.

Riefenstahl finished with a team-high 18 points on 8-of-16 shooting and grabbed a career-high 22 rebounds. Sophomore guard Ali Mableton (Brentwood, N.Y.) scored 15 points and had three assists, while Irvine pitched in with 11 points (4-of-6 shooting) and seven rebounds.

The Profs were led by Wilson who tallied a game-high 30 points after shooting 11-of-15 from the floor.

Farmingdale State will face Medgar Evers in the consolation game on Saturday at 2:00 p.m.
