Bates men's basketball rebounds, defeats Salve Regina 83-63

WORCESTER, Mass. -- Malcolm Delpeche tallied a double-double to lead the Bates men's basketball team to an 83-63 victory over Salve Regina in the consolation game of the WPI Ted Coghlin Memorial Tournament. 

The Bobcats (1-1) out-rebounded the Seahawks (0-3) 40-28 on the afternoon with the Delpeche twins tallying 10 boards apiece. Malcolm Delpeche '17 (Wilmington, Del.) notched a team-high 20 points while senior Quin Leary(Auburn, Maine) added 14 points and seven rebounds off the bench.

The turnover battle was fairly even, but Bates notched 20 points off turnovers while the Seahawks managed just six. 

Although the Bobcats ended up winning by 20, they fell behind by a count of 11-4 early in the action on an Andrew Bronstein layup with 17:26 to go in the first half. Bates came roaring back behind a three-pointer from sophomore Max Hummel (Glastonbury, Conn.), a Marcus Delpeche '17 (Wilmington, Del.) layup and three Malcolm Delpeche jumpers. 

Trailing 18-17 with 10:55 to go in the first half, Leary drained a three to put the Bobcats ahead for good. That marked the start of a 23-7 run for Bates as they closed out the first half on fire, taking a 40-25 lead into the locker room.

Leary (12 points on 5-7 shooting) and Malcolm Delpeche (14 points on 6-9 shooting) did most of their damage in the first half of action.  

The Seahawks puled to within six at 52-46 with 10:36 to go in the game on a Nicholas Bates layup. Bates matched Malcolm Delpeche with a 20-point effort on the afternoon.

But first-year Tom Coyne (Falmouth, Maine) nailed back-to-back threes, starting a 13-0 run that put Bates up 65-46 with 7:55 left in regulation.

Junior Shawn Strickland (Middletown, Conn.) did most of his damage in the second half, tallying nine of his 14 points. Strickland finished the contest with a game-high four assists. His three-pointer with 7:13 to go and his layup with 6:32 remaining extended the Bates lead to 70-48.

The Bobcats cruised down the stretch to even their record on the season at 1-1.

Bates hosts Southern Maine at Alumni Gym Tuesday at 7:30 p.m. in the Bobcats' home opener.
