Season Debut for Men's Basketball Spoiled by Overtime Loss Against Rochester

ITHACA, N.Y. – The Ithaca College men's basketball team fell to the University of Rochester in overtime, 104-94, on Tuesday night in a non-conference matchup inside Ben Light Gymnasium.  With the loss, Ithaca is now 0-1 while the Yellowjackets, who are receiving votes in the latest d3hoops.com national poll, sit at 1-0 on the season.

Both teams had a hot hand to begin the first half as the lead would change four times over the first four minutes of action.  With the score tied at 20-20, Rochester would knock down a corner 3-pointer to hold a 23-20 edge, but Joey Flanagan answered with one his two treys in the first half to knot things up at 23-23 with 12:50 remaining in the opening stanza.

From there, Ithaca would find its grove, scoring 14 of the game's next 16 points including 11 unanswered capped by a 3-pointer from Marc Chasin to give the Bombers a 37-26 lead.

A fast break lay-up by the Yellowjackets made it a nine-point game before Chasin connected on another from distance to make it 40-28, but the momentum would swing in Rochester's favor as the visitors closed out the first half on a 13-2 run to make it 42-41 heading into the break.

Coming out of intermission, Rochester continued to find its stride.  The Yellowjackets opened up a 49-42 lead just over a minute into the second half courtesy of an 11-0 run fueled by three field goals from behind the arc.

Rochester would grow its lead to 10 points, 60-50, with 15:29 left to play, but the Bombers weathered the storm and cut the deficit to three points with a 9-2 run, which included a dunk from freshman Gabe Perez-Ronchetta to bring the score to 62-59.

As the half wore on, momentum would swing back and forth until the Bombers begin to hit their stride with seven minutes still showing on the clock.  Ithaca scored six unanswered points including a pair of free throws by both Chasin and Sebastian Alderete to make it a 73-70 game and would go on to net seven more points to take a one-point lead, 80-79 with just over four minutes left in the game.

After swapping baskets, Ithaca would score seven quick points fueled by an old-fashioned three-point play by Chasin to hold its largest lead of the half, 90-87, with 53 seconds still to go.  At the other end of the court, Rochester converted an and-one of its own to send the game into overtime with the score tied at 90-90.

In the extra period, it was all Rochester as the visitors outscored the Bombers 14-4 including eight points at the charity stripe en route to the 104-94 win.

Four players reached double figures in scoring for Ithaca led by Chasin's 32 points on 11-of-22 shooting.  The junior guard also added seven rebounds, two assists and a steal.  Matt Flood had 13 points and four boards while Perez-Ronchetta added 12 points including three triples in his debut.  Carroll Rich stuffed the stat sheet with 10 points, seven assists and six rebounds while Peter Ezema added eight points and nine boards.

The Bombers return to the court at 8 p.m. on Friday when they host St. Joseph's – Long Island as part of the annual Cortaca Classic inside Ben Light Gymnasium.  Prior to the Bombers' game, Cortland will duke it out with Purchase.  Tip time is scheduled for 6 p.m.
