Rutgers-Newark Set for NJAC Semis at Stockton

NEWARK, N.J. (February 23, 2016) - The Rutgers University-Newark men's basketball team will travel to Stockton University Wednesday night at 7 p.m. for the semifinals of the New Jersey Athletic Conference (NJAC) Tournament Championship.

The third-seeded Scarlet Raiders advanced to the semifinals with a 78-52 rout of William Paterson University Saturday night in The Golden Dome Arena, while the second-seeded Ospreys earned a bye into the round of four. Each team finished the regular season with an NJAC record of 14-4, but Stockton held the tiebreaker over R-N via a pair of head-to-head victories.

Rutgers-Newark heads in to Wednesday night's tip having won its last six games and boasting an overall record of 20-6. R-N has now won 20 games in three of the last four seasons, and the Scarlet Raiders are making their fourth-straight appearance in the conference semifinals.

Stockton is 19-6 overall (9-3 at home) and the Ospreys have won two-straight contests after a 68-61 loss to regular-season NJAC champ New Jersey City University.

The Ospreys used a 20-4 run to turn a 26-22 halftime lead into a 20-point advantage with 13:36 left in the game. Senior forward Jordan McDaniel led the Scarlet Raiders with 14 points, and sophomore guard Tyler Ofray had eight points and five rebounds. Sophomore forward Darius Jerkins scored a game-high 15 points and grabbed nine rebounds as four Ospreys were in double figures.

Stockton 66, Rutgers-Newark 63 - February 1, 2016 - Newark, N.J.
Senior forward David Azoroh scored underneath to give the Scarlet Raiders a 63-62 lead with 41 seconds to play, but the Ospreys scored the final four points to escape The Golden Dome Arena with a 66-63 NJAC victory. Azoroh finished with 18 points on 6-of-10 shooting and McDaniel had 13 points and nine rebounds. Senior guard Armin Cane had 18 points and five rebounds to lead Stockton.

The numbers tell the story of a very even matchup. Stockton and the Scarlet Raiders are one-two in the conference in scoring defense, with the Ospreys pacing the league in scoring margin, and Newark leading the way in field-goal percentage and field-goal percentage defense (Stockton is No. 2 in field-goal percentage defense and No. 3 in field-goal percentage). R-N also sits atop the conference ranks in three-point field-goal percentage defense and is giving up a league-low 33.8 rebounds per game. Stockton leads the NJAC in thefts, and the Scarlet Raiders are tops in blocked shots.

McDaniel leads Rutgers-Newark and is second in the conference in scoring at 21.2 points per game, and senior guard John Snow is fifth, averaging 18.1 points per game. McDaniel also sits fifth in the league in rebounding at 7.0 per outing, fourth in field-goal percentage (53.6 percent) and eighth in three-point field-goal percentage (39.8 percent). Azoroh holds the top spot in the NJAC in field-goal percentage (56.6 percent) and senior guard Vik Singh is second in three-point field-goal percentage (43.1 percent) as McDaniel and Azoroh are tied for fourth in the conference with 28 blocked shots apiece.

Stockton's Cane leads the Ospreys in scoring at 16.7 points per game as a total of four players average 11 points or more per contest. Cane also paces Stockton in rebounding, with junior Jaymere Hadden leading the way with 2.7 assists per game. Sophomore guard Tyler Ofray leads the Raiders in assists per game, handing out an excellent 11 in Saturday's win over Paterson and averaging 3.4 per game.
