Nazareth Routes Utica on Senior Day, 83-61

ROCHESTER, NY – The Nazareth men's hoops squad won its fourth straight contest to close out the regular season with an 83-61 victory over Utica College on Senior Day at Kidera Gymnasium.


With the win, Nazareth secures the No. 2 seed for the Empire 8 Championship next weekend hosted by top seeded St. John Fisher.  The Golden Flyers will square off against Hartwick College in the semifinals on Friday night with the game time to be determined.  Nazareth and Hartwick split during the year. 

After a strong shooting performance a night ago, Nazareth began the opening half shooting nearly 60 percent from the floor (20-of-33). 

Nazareth built a 27-13 lead following a 3-pointer from Mitch Ford.  He had 12 points in the half.

Tyler Stenglein was 6-for-9 from the field, scoring 14 of his 18 points in the first.  Stenglein poured in six straight points for the Golden Flyers to push their lead to 45-26 with under four minutes to play.  He also finished the game with five assists.

Nazareth held a 51-30 lead at the break.

In the second half, Nazareth used a stretch of three 3-pointers, including two from Josh Gillard to push ahead 62-42 at the 13 minute mark. 

The Golden Flyers continued to hold a double digit margin and led by many as 25 points.

Ford and Maurice Mills each poured in 16 points and grabbed nine rebounds in the win. 

Brendan Wind was also in double digits with 10 points.

Seniors Nick Nadeau (six points) and Steven Soltysik (five points) scored in their final game at Kidera Gymnasium.
