Men's Basketball wins 14th straight with 81-48 victory over Rhodes

BIRMINGHAM, Ala.—The Birmingham-Southern men's basketball team won its 14th straight game Friday evening, defeating Rhodes 81-48 in Bill Battle Coliseum.

The Panthers moved to 18-6 overall and remained unbeaten at 13-0 in Southern Athletic Association play. The Lynx fell to 10-14 overall and 4-9 in league action.

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • BSC pulled out to a 14-2 lead in the first six minutes, and Rhodes responded with eight straight points to cut it to 14-10 at the 12:43 mark.
  • The Panthers then used a 16-0 run to pull ahead 30-10 over the next seven minutes, but the Lynx responded with another run of their own, cutting it to 30-20 by the 2:32 mark of the first half.
  • The teams traded baskets to end the half with BSC leading 34-23.
  • BSC opened the second half with an 8-1 run in the first two minutes to go up 42-24, and maintained a double-digit lead the rest of the way.

NOTABLE

  • Senior Alex Avery led all players with 18 points on 8-11 shooting; he also pulled down a game-high nine rebounds and had three blocks.
  • Senior Ross Welch added 11 points, going 3-4 from three-point range, and led with five assists.
  • Seventeen Panthers saw playing time, with senior John Crain and freshman Matty Rudak leading the bench players with eight points apiece.

UP NEXT

  • BSC wraps up regular season play at home on Sunday, hosting Hendrix at 3 p.m.
  • It will be Senior Day for Avery, Crain, and Welch.
  • The Panthers are set to host the 2016 SAA Championship next weekend as the No. 1 seed, and will take on the eighth seed in the quarterfinals on Friday at 3 p.m.
