HOBOKEN, NJ – Host Stevens Institute of Technology (12-11, 8-6 E8) made 15 three-pointers and shot 54% from behind the arc to take down the Hartwick men's basketball team 96-68 on Tuesday night at Canavan Arena.
The loss snaps a five-game Hartwick win streak and drops the Hawks to 16-7 overall and 11-3 in Empire 8 play. 'Wick slips into a second-place tie with Nazareth in the standings with this weekend's games still to come.
The Hawks had a tough night shooting the ball as they connected on only 37% from the floor and 28% from three-point range. The Ducks won the rebounding battle by a 51-36 margin, and they turned 17 offensive boards into 24 second-chance points.
Trevor Norton (Mullica Hill, NJ/Ursinus College) scored 18 points to lead the Hawks. Brandon LaForest (Cohoes, NY/Cohoes) scored 14 points to go along with eight rebounds and four assists. Matt Wilson (Shelton, CT/Franklin & Marshall College) contributed nine points. He also tied for a game-high with 10 rebounds and blocked three shots.
Patrick Barron and Evan Klimchak would combine for 44 points and a 10-of-15 three-point shooting performance. Barron finished with a game-high 24 points with Klimchak adding 20.
The score was tied at 13-apiece with just over 11 minutes to play in the opening half. The Ducks would close the half out-scoring the Hawks 29-16 to grab a 42-29 advantage. They would make 11 of their last 20 shots, including six three-point baskets.
A 20-13 run with four more treys to start the second half gave the Ducks a 20-point advantage, 62-42, with 4:46 elapsed. A LaForest three-pointer with 14:25 remaining cut the deficit to 17 points, but it would be as close as the Hawks would get the rest of the way.
Alex Lorenz would contribute 18 points and 10 rebounds for Stevens. Kevin Zychowski also was in double figures with 13.
The Hawks still have a shot at the top seed in the Empire 8 Tournament but need a victory on Friday night at first-place St. John Fisher. 'Wick wraps up the regular season the following day at Ithaca.
