Hot Shooting Night Leads to Marlin Rout of H-SC

VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. – The Virginia Wesleyan College men's basketball team shot 50% from the field Wednesday night, knocking down 15 three-pointers to coast past Hampden-Sydney College 80-52 in Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) action. The 15 made threes tie the school record for three-pointers in a game, originally set against Guilford in 2006.

The Marlins started quickly, jumping out to a 16-9 lead on a jumper by Keijon Honore just six minutes into the game.

Hampden-Sydney rallied to go on a 12-2 run to take a 21-18 lead. Four different players scored in the spurt for the Tigers, led by Andrew Evans who scored the final five points of the run, with the capper coming on a trifecta from the left wing for the three-point H-SC lead.

That rally would be the only one the Tigers could muster as Virginia Wesleyan ran off an 8-0 run of its own to take a 26-21 lead. That spurt was part of a larger 18-3 run that carried the Marlins into the half up 36-24. Four different players scored from the Marlins to take the commanding lead with Khory Moore and Justin Watson providing five each.

The hot shooting continued in the second half as Tim Jones came out of the break and immediately knocked down a three-pointer. Moore followed on the next possession with another three, followed by one more from Jones to go up 45-24 just 1:38 into the final period. Another three by Khalil Barnette and one by Honore, which he was fouled on and converted the four-point play, swung all the momentum to the Marlins, icing the game with the hosts up 61-34 midway through the final period.

Guilherme Guimaraes led Hampden-Sydney (14-8/6-7) with 13 points and five rebounds while Mike Murry tallied 11 points, most coming in the first half, to go with five rebounds and four assists.

Jones paced the Marlins with 20 points and six made threes while Moore tallied 15 points and Barnette, 10.

Virginia Wesleyan (16-6/11-2) host Washington and Lee University (10-12/3-10) Saturday at 2 p.m. The contest will be part of a doubleheader with the women's basketball team who are scheduled to start at 4:30 p.m.
